  Keble are the dark horses

  Strong rumours from the rivers Isis and the Cam hint of no change at the top by the end of this week's Torpids and Lent races. Oriel, head of the river at Oxford, boast five Oxford triallists including Isis oarsmen, Todd and Holland, together with a Goldie oarsman, Pitt. Oriel's all-round strength should keep them ahead.

  Keble might conceivably appear as dark horses with last year's Oxford stroke, Diserens, leading them and Oxford's lightweight captain, Jordan, and a junior international, Donaldson, on board. Another Keble Blue, a Canadian, Moran, may just be enticed into the Keble crew. Exeter, who won junior eights at the Southern Universities regatta, and Pembroke, who took the novices' title, could make some progress in the chart.

  Merton second boat loses seven places

  Catastrophe hit Merton's second boat on the opening day of the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis. Their cox lost control of his boat soon after the start of division five and was helpless as the craft collided with the river bank. As a result Merton suffered a dramatic drop of seven places into division six.

  There were no such problems for the undisputed head of the river Oriel. They overcame a sluggish start to click into top gear and quickly put plenty of water between their opponents.

  Brasenose moved up to the top division with a fine performance when catching Jesus at the boathouse. [Bumps Chart]

  Oriel Soon in Full Stride

  Despite a bad start, Oriel, the undisputed kings of Oxford University Torpids, soon got into their stride and retained their headship on the Isis yesterday.

  The most exciting incident of the day was in the men's Division V event where the Merton cox lost control of his craft and ended up in the bank soon after the start. This led to a gigantic drop of seven places into Division VI for the unlucky Merton eight.

  One of the best performances came from Brasenose, who moved up to Division I with a bump over Jesus [List of Bumps]

  Jesus caught broadside

  A re-row [for Jesus, Wadham and Hertford] was ordered by the umpire in Division Two of the men's race on the second day of the Oxford University torpids on a freezing Isis yesterday.

  The trouble flared up when the Jesus boat was caught by Pembroke and turned broadside. [Bumps Chart]

  Re-Row Ordered in Div. II

  A re-row was ordered in Division II after the Jesus boat turned broadside during the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis yesterday.

  After a lengthy inquiry it was decided that Jesus, Wadham and Hertford should re-row today at 11 a.m.

  Oriel III, after bumping University II, were relegated two places for failing to get clear in their Division III race.

  In the women's division, St Hilda's made up further ground with their third bump in two days, while Jesus retained the headship with another fluent display, rowing over unchallenged from Somerville. [List of Bumps]

  Chaos in final race of day

  Chaos reigned in the final race of the day at the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis yesterday. The leaders, Oriel, were under no threat. [Bumps Chart]

  Balliol Blow leaves Oriel in the Clear

  Balliol, challenging for the top spot in the Oxford University Torpids, suffered the humiliation of being dropped a further three places after being bumped by Worcester on the Isis yesterday.

  They were dropped two places for late acknowledgement and one place for failing to finish the course. Oriel, Head of the River, look certain to go clear for the ninth year running.[List of Bumps]

  Oriel wear crown for ninth year in a row

  In brilliant sunshine well over 3,000 spectators thronged the banks of the Isis on the final day of Oxford University Torpids to see Oriel row clear for the ninth year in succession. In the women's section Jesus also retained the headship. [Bumps Chart]

  Oriel Never in any Danger

  It was still a case of "catch us if you can" as Oriel rowed clear for the ninth successive year in the Oxford University Torpids on the Isis on Saturday.

  They were a length clear of Keble at the boathouses and never looked in any danger as they powered to the finish.
