1951 St Catherine's Association News Sheet

For the first time in the history of St Catherine's Boat Club it was decided to enter an Eight at Henley in the Thames Cup. The entries were heavy and a preliminary heat had to be rowed before the Regatta proper. In this St Catherine's were drawn against Reading R.C. who won rather easily, but there is some consolation in defeat in that the winners were a good crew who were potential finalists. In the words of the Captain of Boats, `we shall consider our efforts have not been in vain if we have perhaps been able to begin a Henley tradition at St Catherine's.'

The main feature of the Captain's [A. C. Hancox] report was a statement that the officers and coaches of the club were to coach on the principles laid down by R. Meldrum Esq. of Cambridge. There followed a brief analysis of rowing styles, and a demonstration of the need to adopt Meldrum as a model.
