Boathouse Fire
Email sent to RS mailling list on 7th July
As some of you may know, there was a serious fire in our boathouse on Monday night. Although nobody was injured, all our eights were destroyed along with those of the other Colleges which share the building.

The inside of eights bay is completely devastated but it does not appear that the boathouse itself has suffered significant structural damage and the only obvious external signs of the fire are a few scorch marks above the boathouse doors. We believe that there has been some damage to our club room, mostly through smoke, but the room is sealed until the insurance people visit on Friday morning so we don't know any more than that.

As to the cause of the fire, it seems to have been a pre-planned arson attack. We have no idea why we were targetted, possibly just unlucky at being the first boathouse along the towpath.

The Home Bursar, James Bennett, has been dealing with matters and fully appreciates the urgency of getting the building back into a fit state and replacing the lost equipment before the start of next term. We are hoping that our insurance will cover most, if not all, of the costs.

Inside of Catz bay: [1], [2] The small boats bays (fours, double, singles) were unaffected.
