Oxford MIPAS meeting#112
20 February 07

Present

Instrument Status [Prev] [Next]
Currently operating normally.
MIPAS should be about to start 3 days of continuous NOM measurements measurements (20-23 Feb).

January Monthly Report (JH) [Prev] [Next]
MIPAS monthly report for January is now available [Summary]
Full report downloadable from http://earth.esa.int/pcs/envisat/mipas/reports/monthly/

L1B Data (JH) [Prev] [Next]
Coverage maps updated to show data acquired up to the end of January 2007.

L1B Anomalies (AD) [Prev] [Next]

Reduced Resolution Retrievals (CP) [Prev]
Running local processing (using MORSE) of reduced resolution data from December 2006 for
  1. NOM Mode data, using NOM microwindows - there seems to be an unrealistic minimum just above the equatorial tropopause in CH4 and N2O, and a double peak in O3 (this is not a day/night difference)
  2. MA Mode data, using NOM microwindows for altitudes up to 70km - identified forward/reverse signature in H2O
  3. Using MA Microwindows selected for polar winter conditions - these show evidence of high NO2, even though a Solar Proton Event was not recorded for Dec 2006 (although Envisat itself automatically shut down on Dec 14th, probably due to enhanced solar activity)
Results presented at QWG12 meeting [.PPT]

TES Radiance Comparison (CW) [Prev] [Next]
Now resolved all the bugs in detecting spikes in TES spectra and progressing to regridding the data for MIPAS comparisons (0.06cm-1 grid to 0.0625cm-1).

NOx (JW) [Prev] [Next]
Constructing monthly mean maps of NOx to examine the stratospheric variability at middle and low latitudes

BEAT software (JW) [Prev] [Next]
http://www.science-and-technology.nl/beat/
  • Some useful IDL code for running BEAT to read L2 data with error checks
    L2D = BEATL2_INGEST ( L2fil, 'SPECIES=NO2' )
    IF BEATL2_IS_ERROR(L2D) THEN GOTO, skipl2
(L2fil is a MIPAS L2 filename, or list of filenames)

    Cloud Parameters (JH) [Prev] [Next]
Assuming that Cloud Effective Fraction can be related to the Cloud Index now examining how to incorporate CEF as a constraint on Cloud Top Height and Extinction in the a priori covariance for the joint CTH, Ext, Cloud Top Temperature retrieval.

    Mesospheric Retrievals (LMV) [Prev] [Next]
To try to bypass the problem of retrieving temperature and pressure in the mesosphere, try simply taking ratio of spectral band containing lines from some molecule to spectral band containing CO2 lines as a quick method of spotting enhancements.
    • Applying this to MIPAS mesospheric data acquired before (MA mode) and after (UA mode) the Jan 2005 Solar Proton Event seems to show [Plot] depleted O3 and enhanced NO2, as might be expected.
    • Need to extend this to include NO and CO bands, to lower altitudes to look for HNO3 enhancement, also convert ratios to approximate VMRs

    Aircraft Emissions (MH) [Prev] [Next]
Trying to detect aircraft emission signatures in MIPAS spectra from AE mode measurements in Dec06
    • Report received from Marcus Koehler (Cambridge University) showing model predictions of zonal mean perturbations for various species. NO2 and CO look to be the most likely candidates for detection - perturbations of the order of a few percent of the total slant path.
    • Starting to code a linear retrieval: find regions of the spectrum where the NO2 Jacobian for tropospheric perturbations is largest and assume that the total radiance from 12 and 15km tangent paths is simply proportional to the total number of NO2 molecules (the 15km path is assumed to be above the aircraft tracks, and included to scale out the stratospheric NO2 contribution).
