Oxford MIPAS meeting#130
11 Dec 07

Present

Instrument Status [Prev] [Next]
Operating continuously since 1st Dec 2007 in standard cycle of 8 days NOM, 1 day MA, 1 day UA.
MA scheduled for 9th Dec, UA 10th Dec.
October monthly report available on ESA web-site (but no summary distributed) [Prev] [Next]

L1B Data (JH) [Prev] [Next]
[L1B Data Coverage]
L1B coverage maps updated to Nov 27th (or will be shortly...)
L1B data available on ESA server approximately 2 weeks after acquisition

Oxford L2 Processing (AD) [Prev] [Next]
Running MORSE to retrieve our own L2 data products. pT, H2O, O3, HNO3, CH4, N2O, NO2, CFC-11, CFC-12, ClONO2, N2O5 and CO (LTE assumption)
Processing all new data with a lag of around 2½ weeks (2 weeks for L1B data to appear, ~2-3 days process L2 locally)
Also processing all previous Oct/Nov/Dec data (2002-2006) to provide comparison with recent data
New series of plots added showing Recent Trends in last 100 days of data, compared with previous years

Polar Stratospheric Clouds (JH) [Prev] [Next]
Trying to use SVD techniques to distinguish different types of PSC
  1. Use cloud-cleared data to establish clear-sky Singular Vectors for Antarctic atmospheres, altitude range 15-18km
  2. Then apply to cloud-contaminated spectra to get best fit and attempt to remove molecular contributions
  3. Perform SV decomposition on residuals to establish new cloudy SVs
  4. [Plot] of cloudy singular vectors
  5. [Plot] showing correlation of singular values, colour coded according to PSC types identified using IMK algorithm (blue=ice, green=STS, red=NAT)
First and Second singular vectors seem to show reasonable discrimination between 3 types of PSC identified using IMK CI algorithms, but not clear if this is not just effectively a 'temperature' classification.
Next step: repeat with different altitude ranges and see if correlation holds.

Mesospheric Retrievals [Prev] [Next]
Still seeking efficient solution for calculating the inverse of a large order (~1000s) apodised noise variance matrix.

CO Retrievals (JW) [Prev]
Investigating how to incorporate non-LTE effects into a practical (i.e. near real time) operational scheme to retrieve CO

MIPAS - HIRDLS Comparisons (CW) [Prev]
Comparing MIPAS and HIRDLS SD of zonal mean profiles in order to evaluate the HIRDLS precision (precision values assigned to HIRDLS L2 data are known to significantly underestimate actual values

Optimising Cloud Index (HD/AD) [Prev] [Next]
Final Report from Harry Desmond's investigation into optimising Cloud Index microwindows now on the web
