Oxford MIPAS meeting#139
13 May 08

Present

Instrument Status [Prev] [Next]
Operating continuously since 1st Dec 2007 in standard cycle of 8 days NOM, 1 day MA, 1 day UA.
Recent interruptions in data [ESA web-page]
Special "Volcanic Eruption" observation mode planned for 15th May to coincide with Chaiten, Chile (see below).

L1B Data [Prev] [Next]
[L1B Data Coverage] (new web-page, gradually replacing [old page] which is no longer being updated).
"Off-line" (OFL) L1B data available on D-PAC ftp site approximately 2 weeks after acquisition.
"Near Real Time" (NRT) data available on Kiruna or ESRIN ftp sites ~ hours after acquisition.

Oxford L2 Processing (AD) [Prev] [Next]
[Oxford L2 Data Coverage]
Running MORSE to retrieve our own L2 data

Cloud Retrievals (JH) [Prev] [Next]
Looking for techniques to distinguish between water and ice spectra for clouds with the same macrophysical parameters (Cloud top height, cloud top temperature and extinction)

Linear Retrievals (LMV) [Prev] [Next]
Using complete MIPAS bands but single retrieval iteration (ie no update of forward model or Jacobians) for mesospheric retrievals to improve S/N and reduce CPU cost.

TES Limb Retrievals (CW) [Prev] [Next]
Attempting to use MORSE to retrieve pT,H2O,O3 and HNO3 from TES limb-spectra.

Chaiten Volcano (EC/LMV)
Volcano in S.Chile erupted on 2nd May 08, and there was a second major eruption on 6th May (both while MIPAS was switched off).
Plume reportedly reached 17km and blew eastwards across the Atlantic
Surprisingly, perhaps, it does not show up in the [Volcanic SO2 NRT service] from BIRA (using SCIA/GOME2/OMI)
A MIPAS "Volcanic Eruption" special event mode is planned for 15May, but MIPAS has been acquiring spectra in the nominal mode since 07 May so perhaps an SO2 signature can be seen in these?
