EU F5 project coordinated by IMK
to develop independent MIPAS retrieval algorithms
(Website)
- (VJ) RAL Starting work on H2O/O3 retrievals for additional orbits for
intercomparisons
with GOMOS and SCIAMACHY (using ECMWF pT).
- (VP/AB) Oxford still need to fix cloud detection and regularisation
in OPTIMO code
before running new retrievals and rerunning old (2081) retrievals.
Occupation Matrices (CP/AD)

Monthly mean OM stats now on the web.
Summary for May 2003
- Still fewer than expected low latitude profiles processed with
nominal OMs (003,004) (might be due to retrievals failing due to
cloud contamination - no cloud detection in place yet)
- High occurence of "618" (except pT and NO2) indicating one or
more sweeps unusable at 12, 15 or 18 km - probably at least two
of these 3 altitudes.
- Large frequency of profiles with unidentified occupation matrix
- due to ESRIN processing with old OM data (see above)
- Verify no recurrence of problem
with more species residuals than
pT residuals (No.constituent/pT profiles all under 100%).
Some problems
with missing sweeps, unidentified OMs may be associated with
wider than expected departures of the tangent altitudes from the nominal
altitudes, through
- Gaps in altitude bands associated with sweeps in OMs (ie 63-65km,
55-57 km, 44-45km)
(Identified as an action item by the QWG).
- OM altitude bands being too narrow - only +/-2km at low altitudes
- MW mask data being limited to only 1.5km below nominal altitude
(problem for lowest sweep in MW tangent altitude range)
