Off from 2nd-8th Feb, undergoing passive decontamination.

L1 Data (VJ/JR) [Prev] [Next]

(VJ) RAL still looking for best-available L1B data from the off-line processor. Best suggestion so far (from TvC) is to concentrate on data 4 Nov 2003 onwards following the various processing upgrades (although this is still NRT data).
(JR) L1 Orbital plots produced showing cloud-top height for each scan around one orbit of L1 data. Intention is to incorporate these into the BADC catalogue so that users can see what L1 data is available on an orbit by orbit basis.

L2 NRT Data (AQ) [Prev] [Next]

NRT Data received up until 23rd Feb, plotted up until 16th February.
Valid profiles resumed on 8th Feb when the instrument was switched back into nominal operating mode.
Plots of profile locations have now been amended to show both the locations of valid pT profiles (as previously) but with the addition of invalid profiles (shown by crosses) since these indicate where L1 spectra were taken and therefore where L2 data is potentially recoverable.
Some L2 data has now been retrieved for every day since 8th February, 16 days of operation.
Software version 4.59 in use since 23 Jul 2003 (NB: data from 8th Feb 2004 has same s/w version number).
Daily zonal mean traces at 30km show, in particular, a 10% enhancement in H2O at all latitudes since data resumed on 8th Feb, possibly also a similar increase in NO2 suggesting a C-band calibration problem.

Rob Koopman has circulated a report showing comparisons of MIPAS NRT temperature data from Jan/Feb 2003 with the U.Bonn lidar at ESRANGE (Kiruna) which indicated agreement within 2K from 40-70km

L2 OFL Data (AQ) [Prev] [Next]

L2 OFL (off-line) data now received covering 21 Oct - 24 Dec
Profile location plots now show availability of both NRT and OFL data
No further OFL data received since 20 Jan 04.

Auxiliary Data Updates (AD) [Prev]

New data in /home/crun/eodg/mipas

/OM/ Occupation Matrices. New OMs delivered to ESA Feb04
- /nrt/ OMs for MIPAS Near Real Time processing
- /ofl/ OMs for MIPAS Off-line processing
Main changes are
- Removal of all OMs with only one or two retrieval altitudes
- Additional OMs#700+ to allow for combinations of cloud-contaminated lower altitudes plus corrupt spectra at higher altitude.

NH3 Retrievals (AB) [Prev] [Next]

Using local retrieval code OPTIMO to retrieve NH3 from MIPAS spectra.

Much lower concentration than expected from MIPAS Initial Guess climatology - retrievable values only found in the troposphere.
Using sequential estimation around an orbit to improve S/N
Currently investigating degree of 'smoothing' required for sequential estimator
An abstract will be submitted for COSPAR.

Isotopic Retrievals (CP/VP) [Prev] [Next]

Just started to use local retrieval code MORSE to retrieve isotopic concentrations

(CP) First attempt at O3 666 main (squares) and 686 isotopic (diamonds) concentrations retrieved from a single profile of `real' data (Orbit 2081) but very slow (4hours for a single profile!) due to use of line-by-line forward model.
(VP) discussions with members of TES team and David Noone (NCAR) on current modelling of H2O and CH4 isotopes, but not yet attempted any retrievals.

RAL Retrievals (VJ) [Prev] [Next]

Attempting to retrieve O3+H2O from S6 mode (ie 0.1cm-1 resolution, high horizontal sampling).

Still investigating methods of determining MIPAS tangent point pressures without performing a pT retrieval (with normal data these are available from the L2 profiles, but S6 data are not processed to L2, aim to use ECMWF T(p) fields).

MORSE (AD) [Prev] [Next]

MIPAS Orbital Retrieval using Sequential Estimation - a local retrieval code being developed for MIPAS retrievals, basically as a flexible, user-friendly, low-memory version of OPTIMO capable of running on `small' machines. See Development Plan.

Seems to retrieve isotopes and constituents for single profiles, but problems with pT retrieval (so recommend using OPTIMO pT for now).
Currently working on speeding up calculations in line-by-line mode.

It is a pleasure to inform you that the distribution of the reprocessed Cal/Val data to the members of the ACVT for validation purposes will start early March. It is expected that the reprocessing for the 2002 (and 2003) major validation campaigns will be finalised by April 2004. A list of reprocessed orbits will be made available soon. The processing teams are currently preparing ftp sites for data distribution. As soon as the ftp addresses and login details are known you will be notified.
The result of the above is that the ACVE-2 validation workshop is confirmed to take place 3-7 May 2004 at ESRIN, Frascati, Italy. The preliminary program will be sent to you soon.
Please note that also a complete reprocessing for all ENVISAT instruments since the beginning of the mission is currently ongoing, but this is decoupled from the Cal/Val specific reprocessing.
