MIPAS Quality Working Group [Prev] [Next]
QWG#3 meeting held 29/30 March in Frascati

Long Term Trends (VP) [Prev]
Time series for different MIPAS species differences v. climatologies as shown at the QWG#3 meeting: [Tem - CIRA] [CH4 - URAP] [H2O - URAP] [HNO3 - IG] [N2O - IG] [O3 - URAP] (scales are K for CIRA differences, ppmv for URAP differeces, % for IG differences)

HALOE Intercomparisons (TI)
Comparing MIPAS data with HALOE measurements. Results will be written up as a report within next few weeks.

RAL Retrievals (VJ) [Prev] [Next]
Note some corrupt L1B data for March 2004 in files extract from the BADC archive
Retrieving orbit 8880 (Nov 2003) and getting oscillating retrievals, but also notice very bad initial NRT H2O profiles at start of orbit.

Data Assimilation (MJ) [Prev] [Next]
Collecting SAGE H2O and O3 data for comparison with MIPAS using assimilation scheme.

Cloud Detection (JJR) [Prev] [Next]
Investigating use of higher (>1.8) cloud indices as a flag for cloud-free data, eg 2.2 seems to show significant improvement in results.
Also looking at tracer correlations CH4-N2O and HNO3-N2O.

Email from Envisat Mission Manager, 1st Apr 2004

During the last weeks, the Envisat MIPAS instrument experienced an increasing number of anomalies and subsequent instrument unavailabilities. To avoid having a mechanical blockage within the instrument, ESA took the decision to interrupt temporarily the regular instrument operations on 26 March.

The anomalies are related to the behaviour of the instrument interferometer slides. During the next weeks, a series of tests will be performed to support the investigations aimed at determination of the detailed cause of the anomalies and at definition of the workaround solutions.

An updated report will be provided on 21 April, including a target date for reactivation of product dissemination to users.

The MIPAS products quality was not affected by the anomalies until instrument-operations interruption.
