New IDL program l1c.pro to apodise L1B spectra and extract microwindows in L1C format (suitable for input to MORSE and OPTIMO).

Intended for distribution with MORSE.

NB: doesn't use BEAT software (in order to make the code more portable) since MIPAS L1B format is relatively (!) straightforward to read.

Bianca Dinelli has been studying the across-track special modes (orbits 9300 (S5) and 9322,9323,9324 (S3)) for which only 9300 seems well-behaved - others have 69 sweeps per scan! which results in zero NESR values beyond 20 scans (actually 3459 records) [Prev]
Fabrizio Niro has been working on a CO2 line mixing model for calculating CO2 look-up tables in Q-branch regions near 721cm-1 and 791cm-1
Marco Ridolfi investigating regularisation techniques for coping with retrievals at 1.5km spacing. [Prev]

Investigating cause of high retrieved H2O at high altitudes

Try selecting H2O microwindows excluding the C band
This was actually done by the operational processor during Dec'03 [OM Stats] when the C-band spectra were corrupt and OM424 (using MWs H2O_0002,0021 and 0023 - 21&23 in B-band) was selected instead
However, results for 2081 using 424 MWs are now far too low! (eg 2ppmv at stratopause)

Investigating cause of persistent low value in CH4 above the equatorial tropopause (also in N2O)

Note that this is more pronounced in the NRT data than in the Offline data, either due to the improved cloud detection of the offline data or that the offline data extends to lower altitudes where cloud free

Investigating large minima in SF6 retrievals at 9km [Prev] [Next]

These appear to be due to cloud-index values for 9km indicating a clear atmosphere where higher altitudes are flagged as cloud contaminated - can be solved if all altitudes below top-most cloud contaminated spectrum are automatically flagged as cloud-contaminated irrespective of actual index
Currently investigating cause of residual oscillation
Also note that the cloud-index incorrectly flags simulated data for 6km for mid-latitude day-time conditions as cloud-contaminated (NB: the cloud-index was only designed to work for 12km and above)

please be informed that ESA might possibly operate MIPAS during November 2004 (beside instrument characterisation measurements) also in backup mode (with old definitions for nominal mode) rather than in reduced resolution mode as communicated to you during our first meeting
