Problems with Envisat low-rate data - have they `lost' some data? - see message from Fabrizia Cattaneo (ESA) 15th Feb
Latest MIPAS Mission Plan suggests that MIPAS is operating in the new nominal mode for 5 orbits a day, but not confirmed.
Rob Koopman states that in addition to these 5 orbits/day, it is also planned to have 3-day blocks continuous measurements from
- 20 February 09:22 until 23 February 07:28
- 1 March 09:40 until 4 March 09:54

Connection with BADC MIPAS reprocessed L1B data archive is still intermittent.
Still no L1B data available from MIPAS for operations since start of 2005
MIPAS Science Team meeting, originally scheduled for 18th Feb, has been postponed until 3rd/4th March as a result

Daily zonal mean files have been generated for all current off-line data and sent to Manuel Lopez-Puertas (IAA)

H2O2 (EP) [Prev] [Next]

Constructing H2O2 Seasonal Climatology from MIPAS 2003 measurements. H2O2 is a reservoir for odd hydrogen (HO2, OH, H)

[Plot] of Sep 03 night (upper) and day (lower) zonal mean distributions
Main feature is a persistent nighttime peak over the equator, 7-10mb which can be explained by HO2 production/ H2O2 photodissociation
Also a lower altitude peak in the southern polar winter thought to be related to denitrification (NO reacts with HO2, removing H2O2 source).
GRL paper in final stages of preparation, showing results in conjunction with SLIMCAT model output.

Pressure Retrieval (IY) [Prev] [Next]

M.Phys project attempting to retrieve tangent pressure directly from spectrum by ratio of suitably chosen microwindows.

Mostly the agreement is reasonable (within a few percent) but a number of points lie well outside acceptable limits
These points are thought to be due to ambiguities in the interpolation algorithm when the ratio v pressure curve is no longer monotonic - currently working to remove these parts of the curves
Higher `noise' at high altitude is related to the temporary restriction of considering only 1cm-1 wide microwindows - will eventually consider wider microwindows which are expected to improve S/N at high altitudes.

TES Comparisons (CW/CP) [Prev] [Next]

(CW) Looking at TES nadir spectra from 22 Aug 04 over the ocean

Analysing NESR characteristics of spectrum: so far it appears that the 16 detectors have reasonably uniform noise and that the NESR is, to a reasonable approximation, independent of the radiance - at about 100nW for the 1000-1100cm-1 region.

(CP) Looking at TES limb spectra from same time/location. Plan to degrade TES spectra to 0.0625cm-1 and compare limb retrievals with MIPAS using the same microwindows

TES spectra apodised and converted to L1C format for MORSE input
A retrieval has been performed but temperatures much lower than reasonable (eg as predicted by ECMWF profile).
Cause appears to be that TES spectra for this period are poorly calibrated (eg large negative radiances) so next must attempt to fix this.

SF6 Retrievals (AB) [Prev] [Next]

Generating monthly zonal mean maps of SF6 from MIPAS data

Plots for [January] and [August] show signatures consistent with expectation as age-of-air tracer (eg descent in polar winter stratosphere)

NO Microwindows (AD) [Prev]

NO microwindows (NO__0101-110) were originally generated as part of the MIPAS Special Modes study but not thought to be capable of producing a useful retrieval.

At the request of Bianca Dinelli (ISAC/CNR) Look-Up Tables and irregular grids have now been produced for these microwindows for use with the Bologna GEO-FIT code.
LUTs also generated for a set of IMK-generated microwindows originally used at Bologna (now numbered NO__0121-135)

CO Retrieval (JW) [Prev] [Next]

Completed MORSE retrieval of CO for an orbit assuming LTE (so only nighttime values are believable), now starting to look at joint retrieval of CO and Vibrational Temperature to allow for non-LTE.

First step is to construct Jacobian spectra for both and find tangent altitude range where these are distinguishable.

Message from Fabrizia Cattaneo (ESA), 15th Feb 05

Dear Users,

please be informed that due to a  problem detected in the acquisition  chain
at PDHSE - ESRIN  some  LR orbits  acquired  between  25 January and 02-Feb
2005 have been found to be corrupted.

Since  orbit  15310 (2nd February), the data acquired on the LR chain is of
nominal quality. However, the situation is still not nominal and there is a
possibility of occasional orbits being lost .

We  will inform you on the exact list of  affected and lost  orbits and of
any further developments as progresses are made  to retrieve a  fully nominal
situation.
