Oxford MIPAS meeting#93
21 Mar 06

Present

Instrument Status [Prev] [Next]
The ESA web-page says that MIPAS resumed operations on 16th March
February monthly report is here. [Prev] [Next]

L1 Data [Prev] [Next]
FTP site is back up (ftp-ops.de.envisat.esa.int). The BADC seems to be mirroring the Reduced Resolution data.
All Feb 06 L1B RR data to date may be badly calibrated. It has been deleted from the FTP sites and we are awaiting the latest versions.
" Please be informed that the L1b data processed at D-PAC for the period 8 - 22 Feb 2006 were generated using outdated ADFs, due to a problem in the ADF dissemination. The quality of these products is degraded, in particular the accuracy of the radiometric calibration. Therefore these products were deleted from D-PAC server and they will be reprocessed as soon as the dissemination problem will be solved. The D-PAC OFL processing is now running on the historical data (Jan -Dec 2005)."
L1B RR coverage maps may be found here.

HiRDLS Comparisons (CW, AB, CP) [Prev] [Next]
(CW) Completed intial radiance intercomparisons. Now investigating height corrections (absolute pointing) for HiRDLS.
(AB) Getting access to L1 data, especially for Jan-Feb 06 where MIPAS RR data overlaps HiRDLS measurements.
(CP) Ditto, but for L2. Aim to look at HiRDLS ozone values for assimilation intercoparisons.

ACE/MIPAS/ODIN/ACE Comparisons (CP) [Prev]
Completed O3 and T report for comparisons with ACE. [Next]
No progress on isotopes.
DARC has assimilated MLS August-October 2005 data (Ozone?). Looking to get OMI, HiRDLS, TES data for the same perios to do direct comaprisons with the assimilation fields.
Getting to grips with the BEAT software.

2RR Microwindows (ie 0.0625cm-1 resln) (AD) [Prev] [Next]
Microwindow selection and LUT generation now complete for the ESA species (pT,CH4,H2O,HNO3,N2O,NO2,O3), the additional HIRDLS species (CLONO2,F11,F12,N2O5) and CO.
For most cases 10 microwindows (0331-0340) have been selected but in general it is suggested that only the first 5 are used (0331-0335) since the information content drops off rapidly.

Cloud Parameter Retrievals (JH) [Prev] [Next]
Continuing problems with broadband RFM vs measurement agreement.
Instead looking at 960-961 wavenumbers ('microwindow'), and can successfully simulate the observed radiance.
Still have problems with the iterative retrieval code, although have been able to determine the cloud top height to a sub-grid scale (~250m) within the MIPAS 3km FOV.

NOx (JW) [Prev] [Next]
The current model underestimates N2O5 and the resulting rate constant caluclations are significantly lower than literature values.
Trying to determine J(N2O5) - Photolysis - by looking at and fitting the shape of the daytime curve.
Starting some ISAMS comparisons. However the cross-section N2O5 data is common between the datasets. Seeking an independant source of N2O5 data...

O3 validation vs GOME and ECMWF (AW) [Prev] [Next]
Significant discrepancies between the ozone fields are thought to be due to the ECMWF data. It is only observed at the poles.
Generally the ECMWF and MIPAS agree to within 10 percent.

L2 validation (AB) [Prev] [Next]
See [here]: New residual, REC and monthly mean plots for the whole of the full resolution MIPAS dataset (Jul02-Mar04).
