Sage Retrieval


Scientific Objective

Here it is our objective to retrieve aerosol particle properties (density, composition and size) from the SAGE II/III dataset.

Methodology

A new algorithm is beeing developed to retrieve particle size distribtions for aerosols in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.Our inversion technique uses Optimal Estimation theory which is based on Bayesian Statistics and uses nonlinear least squares fitting to identify all possible solutions that solve the equations to within measurement uncertainty. The strength of Optimal Estimation is that it provides the most likely state as well as a probability density distribution or an error covariance, i.e. it incorporates error estimation is part of the retrieval process.

Results

We are currently performing our data runs and are expecting results in the near future.
