Note on the standard deviations:
GlobAEROSOL retrieved log(AOD), rather than AOD itself. In order to avoid biases in the averaging process (see Thomas et al., Atmos. Chem. Phys., 10, 4849-4866, 2010 for details), log(AOD) was also used for producing the regional averages. Thus, the standard deviations provided in the table are not actually true 1-sigma values. Rather, they are the value AOD * ln(10) * 10^[sigma(log(AOD))] - i.e. the standard-deviation of the log(AOD) mapped into the linear AOD frame.
The 1-sigma range shown by the yellow shading on the time series plots show the true 1-sigma range of AOD.
