Working on RAL IMS (infrared microwave scheme) processor combing IASI/MHS for T,q,emissivity, used as preprocessor to CH4 scheme. Trying to get it into NRT processing. Using NWP prior rather than climatology seems to create problems (requiring more iterations) - solution might be to smooth using eigenvectors.

CH4 (RS for DK) [Prev] [Next]
DK currently at IWGGMS12 - GHG monitoring from space - in Kyoto.
Using IMS data as input seems to provide more realistic CH4 fields, eg less land-sea contrast.

Emissivity (RS for DK) [Next]
Maps of retrieved emissivity show significant differences compared to Wisconsin data, eg more structure in Sahara.
Also overcomes problems with ECMWF data due to unresolved orography.

Linear Retrievals (RH) [Prev] [Next]
Working on scheme to create covariance matrix from known errors. Trying various approaches to channel selection.
Looking at Australian fires, particularly CO, to test results.
Also NH3 retrievals over known large plume in Eastern Europe.

NRT SO2 (CH) [Prev] [Next]
Working on Paper describing SO2 NRT & web-site. Also outline for Calbuco paper, joint with other groups.

SO2 (EC) [Prev] [Next]
Attended SSIRC workshop on stratospheric sulphur budget.
Plot of max of global SO2 distribution 1 Sep 14 - 28 Feb 15 following Bardabunga eruption, shows up a couple more volcanoes, C.Verde, Congo, Chile, and pollution over Beijing. Trying to estimate SO2 flux from Bardabunga.

Ash height (IT) [Prev] [Next]
Applying CO2 slicing to retrieve ash altitude, compared with OE retrieval method, also compared with CALIOP. Seems to be comparable in accuracy.

NRT flags (LV) [Prev] [Next]
Submitted paper on ash retrieval.
NRT flags for web-site: problem with setting threshold to decide what is anomalous.
