In 1836 a race was arranged with Cambridge. In consequence of this it was agreed to shorten the number of nights for the Eights, so as to have a clear week's practice for that race. However, as Oriel went up from bottom to second, it was determined to give them an extra night, so that they might attempt to go head.
The boat races have this season been renewed with more than ordinary zeal. On Tuesday evening last [31st May, although Sherwood has 30th] there were no less than twelve beautiful eight-oared cutters, well manned, on the river, contending for the mastery. They were arranged in the following order :-In this race the Jesus crew beat the Exeter, and the Balliol also beat the Brazen-Nose. It was found inconvenient for so many boats to be in the race, the second crews therefore of Christ Church, Jesus, and Brazen-Nose are withdrawn. The race last evening [Fri 3rd June] was expected to be a very interesting one; only the first six named in the list were to start — The colours of the different crews were yesterday hoised in the following order, viz.:—
1. Christ Church 7. Christ Church, 2d crew 2. Exeter 8. Corpus 3. Jesus 9. Jesus, 2d crew 4. Brazen-Nose 10. Brazen-Nose, 2d crew 5. Balliol 11. St. John's 6. Oriel 12. University For the information of our readers at a distance, it may be necessary to state that the boats are arranged in the order they came in the preceding evening, a boat's length being allowed from boat to boat. The distance they have to row is from Iffley to the large boat moored opposite Christ Church Meadow, about a mile in length, and on a part of the river which is picturesque. The crew of any contending boat must gain on their competitors the distance, and strike the stem of their boat against the stern of the other, before they can take the precedence; and this is always hailed with immense applause by the company who line the banks of the river.
1. Christ Church 4. Balliol 2. Jesus 5. Oriel 3. Exeter
On Monday [6th June] the colours of the different boats' crews were arranged on the mast of the large boat moored on the river in the following orderThe weather in the evening was cold, and threatened rain; still, however, there was a large assemblage of persons in the meadow (where a band of music was stationed), and on the side of the river down to Iffley. At about halfpast eight o'clock, the crews having taken their stations at the usual places at Iffley, in the order mentioned above, a gun was fired as the signal for starting, and they all went off at a tremendous rate, not a man in either boat but was striving to his utmost. They continued in their relative situations until they had reached upwards of half the distance home, when it was apparent that the Oriel boat was gaining on the Jesus, and soon afterwards it struck their stern, amidst immense cheering from the spectators, and the contest for that evening was terminated by the Oriel taking the precedence of the Jesus on the list.
1. Christ Church 4. Exeter 2. Jesus 5. Balliol 3. Oriel 6. Brazen-Nose Yesterday evening these manly exercises were to conclude; four eight-oars were announced to start, but the race was not decided when our Journal went to press.
