The University summer eights began yesterday afternoon. The second division boats started in the following order :— Corpus, Queen's, University, Trinity, Worcester, St. Catherine's, Wadham, Oriel, Lincoln, St. Mary Hall, Jesus, and St. Edmund Hall. Queen's caught Corpus in the Gut. St. Catherine's proved no match for Wadham, and had to give way to them below the Long Bridges. Oriel succumbed to Lincoln a little higher up.The first division started at 6 o'clock as follows :— Brasenose, New College, Magdalen, Christ Church, St. John's, Balliol, Hertford, Pembroke, Keble, Exeter, Merton, and Queen's. After an exciting struggle Magdalen overtook New College near the Worcester Barge. Hertford gave in to Pembroke at the Red Post, and some good racing took place between the four last boats, but Keble and Merton just managed to hold their own from Exeter and Corpus [? presumably Queen's] respectively by about a couple of yards in each instance.
The races were continued yesterday afternoon. In the second division Corpus lost another place, being bumped by University. Wadham caught Worcester by the Long Bridges. St. Catherine's gave way to Lincoln under the Willows. In the first division expectation of a hard race for the headship caused an immense attendance. Magdalen, who bumped on Thursday and were thus behind the top boat, got a spendid start, and had gained half a length almost before Brasenose had begun to move. The latter managed to hold their own until nearing the Gut, but Magdalen came up rapidly from the Freewaterstone and made their bump at the Willows. St. John's fell to Balliol in the Gut. Hertford narrowly escaped being caught by Keble. Merton were overtaken by Queen's at the Long Bridges.
There was a very large attendance at the Oxford University summer eight-oar races on Saturday. The second division started in the following order :— Merton, University, Corpus, Trinity, Wadham, Worcester, Lincoln, St. Catherine's, Oriel, St. Mary Hall, Jesus, and St. Edmund Hall. Handicapped by an untrained man in the boat, Merton rapidly lost ground to University, and the latter ran them down at the boathouse. Corpus, who have been bumped each night since the commencement, were overtaken by Trinity as the neared the gut.The first division started at 6 o'clock as under :— Magdalen, Brasenose, New College, Christ Church, Balliol, St. John's, Pembroke, Hertford, Keble, Exeter, Queen's, and Merton [? presumably University]. Magdalen had no difficulty in maintaining their position, but there was a capital race between Brasenose and New College. Near the gut New drew up and, amidst great cheering, secured Brasenose at the crossing . Hertford gave way to Keble at the Red Post, and Exeter, running into the bank in the gut, were easily caught by Queen's.
The May eight-oared races, which have been in progress at Oxford since Thursday last, have proved remarkable for the upset of Brasenose, who for the past three years have been at the head of the river. On Friday, however, they were bumped by Magdalen, and again on Saturday by New.
Yesterday the fourth day's racing of the college eights took place at Oxford. The second division started in the following order :— University, Merton, Trinity, Corpus, Wadham, Worcester, Lincoln, St. Catherine's, Oriel, St. Mary Hall, Jesus, and St. Edmund Hall, and there were four changes. Merton and Corpus each lost another place, the former being overtaken by Trinity opposite the barges, and the latter by Wadham in Iffley Reach. Worcester, after a determined struggle, gave in to Lincoln at the Cherwell, and Jesus were displaced to St. Edmund Hall near the Corpus barge. In the first division, in which there was but one bump, the following was the order of starting :— Magdalen, New College, Brasenose, Christ Church, Balliol, St. John's, Pembroke, Keble, Hertford, Queen's, Exeter, and University. Hertford, who took a bad course, were overtaken by Queen's opposite the Willows.
Yesterday evening in the second division University kept well away from Trinity and passed the post their distance ahead, the latter being two lengths in front of Merton. Wadham looked like adding another bump to their record, and at the Wall were right on to Merton but they ran into Hertford barge. Lincoln secured Corpus without much difficulty in Iffley Reach, and St. Mary Hall gave way to St. Edmund Hall at the Free water stone. In the first division, although there was some good racing, no bump took place.
The races were brought to a conclusion yesterday evening. In the second division there were two changes; Corpus, who have lost a place every night, were overtaken by Worcester besfore reaching the Gut, whilst Jesus caught St. Mary Hall at the Cherwell. As on the previous evening, there was no alteration in the first division, and when Magdalen rowed up several lengths ahead of New College and thus finished at the head of the river they were greeted with prolonged cheers. There was a capital race between Christ Church and Balliol, the latter at one time overlapping Christ Church near the boat-house, who, however, managed to get home by a quarter of a length to the good. Hertford also escaped losing a place to Exeter by a few feet only. The article ends by listing the finishing order.
