The summer eight-oar races commenced at Oxford yesterday afternoon in the presence of visitors from all parts of the country, the attendance being one of the largest ever known. The weather was delightful. The second division rowed first at half-past 4, the order of starting being :— Queen's, Pembroke, Keble, Wadham, Worcester, Oriel, Lincoln, Merton, Jesus, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall. Queen's went away in very good style, and were never in any danger from Pembroke. The latter, however, steadily lost ground to Keble, who overtook them at the boathouse. Merton bumped Lincoln in Iffley reach.
The first division started at 6 o'clock in the following order :— Magdalen, New College, Brasenose, Trinity, Exeter, Balliol, University, Christ Church, St. John's, Hertford, and Queen's. Trinity ran into Brasenose near the Gut, after a magnificent race. University caught Balliol opposite the University barge. St. John's lowered the colours of Christ Church near the Cherwell.
The races were continued yesterday in beautiful weather, and the attendance of spectators was again very large on the river banks and college barges. At half-past 4 the second-division boats started in the following order :— Queen's, Keble, Pembroke, Wadham, Worcester, Oriel, Merton, Lincoln, Jesus, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall. Oriel was displaced by Merton at the red post, and Jesus ran into Lincoln before reaching the free water stone.
The order of the first division was as follows :— Magdalen, New College, Trinity, Brasenose, Exeter, University, Balliol, St. John's, Christ Church, Hertford, and Queen's. Magdalen were never in any danger from New College, and, rowing much better than on the opening night, they led home by a length and a half. Brasenose did very badly against Exeter, who secured them before reaching the Long Bridges, and Balliol would have been caught by St. John's had not the latter's coxswain followed them all over the course. As it was they reached home three yards to the good, University being only half a length ahead at the time. Christ Church fell victims to Hertford at the crossing .
There was a very large attendance at the summer eight-oar races at Oxford on Saturday, the weather being delightful. The second division started at half-past 4 in the following order :— Queen's, Keble, Pembroke, Wadham, Worcester, Merton, Oriel, Jesus, Lincoln, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall. Queen's maintained their lead until passing the Long Bridges, from which point Keble gradually drew up and got within half a length at the finish. Wadham went away at a very fast stroke, and caught Pembroke under the Willows. There was an exciting race between Worcester and Merton. The latter almost succeeded in making the bump near the Red Post, but from this point Worcester drew away, and at the winning-post they were quite a third of a length to the good. A fine struggle ensued between Oriel and Jesus, and although the latter overlapped several feet near the Hertford barge the coxswain missed his opportunity and Oriel just managed to get home. The order of the first division was as under :— Magdalen, New College, Trinity, Exeter, Brasenose, University, Balliol, St. John's, Hertford, Christ Church, and Queen's. The Magdalen crew showed great improvement, and were never in danger of being caught; they passed the University barge with more than a length in hand. Trinity and Exeter followed some distance off. Brasenose and University furnished an exciting contest, and the latter suceeded in overtaking Brasenose near the Cherwell. St. John's lowered the colours of Balliol in front of the Magdalen barge, and Queen's, although they had to row hard to save their position in the second division, managed to overtake Christ Church a short distance from the finish.
Yesterday, the fourth day of these races, the weather was again beautifully fine, and the number of visitors on the river banks and college barges was as large as usual. The second division boats, starting at half-past 4, were in the following order :— Christ Church, Keble, Wadham, Pembroke, Worcester, Merton, Oriel, Jesus, Lincoln, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall. Worcester gained considerably on Pembroke, while Merton succeeded in getting within a couple of yards of Worcester. The only change effected was by Jesus, who ran into Oriel opposite the barge of the latter.
The order of the first division, which started at 6 o'clock, was :— Magdalen, New College, Trinity, Exeter, University, Brasenose, St. John's, Balliol, Hertford, Queen's, Christ Church. The racing in this division proved very uninteresting, and not a single bump was recorded, although at one time during the race Brasenose nearly succeeded in re-bumping University, who had caught them on Saturday. Magdalen never had to extend themselves, leading home a length ahead of New College, but St. John's got unpleasantly close to Brasenose, and only a third of a length separated Balliol from Hertford.
Splendid weather prevailed again yesterday, and there were immense crowds of spectators. The order of starting of the second division boats at half-past 4 was :— Christ Church, Keble, Wadham, Pembroke, Worcester, Merton, Jesus, Oriel, Lincoln, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall. A capital race ensued between Christ Church and Keble, the former getting home after a severe struggle by about three yards to the good. One of the Wadham crew caught a crab opposite the Christ Church barge, and Pembroke regained the position hey lost on Saturday. Oriel had to do their best to keep away from Lincoln.
At 6 o'clock the first division started in the following order :— Magdalen, New College, Trinity, Exeter, University, Brasenose, St. John's, Balliol, Hertford, Queen's, Christ Church. Magdalen never caused their supporters the slightest anxiety, and rowing up in very easy style they passed the post a full length to the good. New College finished a long way ahead of Trinity, who were three lengths in advance of Exeter. University lost ground to Brasenose until they passed the Willows, whence they drew away again. In the meantime St. John's had been steadily gaining on Brasenose, and, coming with a rare spurt from Saunders'-bridge, made their bump just before reaching the Cherwell. Hertford finished within three-quarters of a length of Balliol, with Queen's a long way in the rear. The races, which have excited a very large amount of interest, will be concluded to-day.
The summer eights were brought to a conclusion yesterday evening. The weather was again all that could be desired, and there was a very large attendance of visitors on the college barges and towing path. The second division started in the following order :— Christ Church, Keble, Pembroke, Wadham, Worcester, Merton, Jesus, Oriel, Lincoln, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall. Christ Church experienced great difficulty in keeping clear of Keble, and at the Cherwell the latter looked like making their bump, but the House came again at the finish, and, stalling off a determined effort of their opponents, they retained their position at the head of the second division by three yards. Pembroke, pressed by Wadham, had to row their hardest to keep the place they secured on Tuesday through the unfortunate crab in the Wadham boat, and, despite the plucky exertions of the latter, they got home by a bare quarter of a length. Oriel failed to escape Lincoln, who secured them just after passing the Cherwell.
The first division started in the following order :— Magdalen, New College, Trinity, Exeter, University, St. John's, Brasenose, Balliol, Hertford, Queen's, Christ Church. Magdalen, rowing up in splendid style, passed the winning post a length and a half in advance of New College, thus retaining the headship for the fourth year in succession. New College were more than their distance ahead of Trinity who were fully four lengths in advance of Exeter. St. John's, however, made it very unpleasant for University, and, coming with a brilliant spurt from the Cherwell, they rapidly gained ground, and only failed to bump by a couple of yards. Brasenose were half a length in front of Balliol at the finish, the latter having a tremendous struggle with Hertford, who were about three yards in the rear as they passed the post.
The net changes of position this year may be summarized as follows :— In the first division all the boats changed their places except Magdalen and New College, who remain first and second. St. John's went up three places, University two, and Trinity, Exeter, Hertford, and Queen's one each. Brasenose fell four places, Christ Church fell three, to sandwich boat, and Balliol two. In the second division Merton and Jesus went up two places each and Keble one. Oriel fell three places, and Lincoln and Pembroke one each. The positions of St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall at the end were unchanged.
