In spite of heavy showers which fell during the afternoon, the eights which began at Oxford yesterday were largely attended. There was some capital racing, three bumps taking place in each division.The order of starting in the second division was :— Hertford, Pembroke, Exeter, Lincoln, Corpus, Queen's, St. Catherine's, Wadham, St. John's, Oriel, and Jesus. Pembroke secured Hertford soon after the start; St. Catherine's were overtaken Wadham in the gut; and Oriel bumped St. John's opposite the Freewater stone.
The first division started in the following order :— New College, Magdalen, Balliol, Trinity, University, Christ Church, Worcester, Brasenose, Merton, Keble, and Pembroke. There was a magnificent race for the headship of the river. Magdalen went off at a very rapid stroke and gained considerably in Iffley Reach, where they were within a few yards of making the bump, but from the Boathouse New College drew gradually away and finished a length to the good. Trinity succumbed to University at the Long Bridges. Christ Church were displaced by Worcester near the Freewater stone, and Pembroke made their second bump by overtaking Keble at the Weirs Bridge.
Showery weather prevailed at Oxford yesterday, but fortunately the rain held off during the racing. The barges and banks of the river were crowded with a brilliant company, and some interesting struggles were witnessed. Three bumps were recorded in each division. In the second division Pembroke caught Hertford at Weir's Bridge; Wadham defeated St. Catharine's in the Gut, where also Oriel bumped St. John's. In the first division, New finished at the head, after an interesting race with Magdalen. At the Freewater Stone University caught Trinity, and near by Christ Church succumbed to Worcester, whilst Pembroke beat Keble at Weir's Bridge. There was a marked improvement in the weather yesterday as compared with that of Thursday and the second day's racing in the eights at Oxford brought together a large attendance. The racing was of a very interesting character, as no fewer than eight bumps were made, all the boats in the first division, with the exception of Keble, changing places.The second division started at half-past 4 in the following order :— Keble, Hertford, Exeter, Lincoln, Corpus, Queen's, Wadham, St. Catherine's, Oriel, St. John's, and Jesus. Hertford began to lag behind shortly after starting, and at the Freewater stone were overtaken by Exeter, Lincoln being close up to the latter at the time. St. Catherine's were no match for Oriel, who ran into them before reaching the Weirs Bridge, and St. John's fell to the bottom position by being caught by Jesus in the Gut.
The order in the first division, which started at 6 o'clock, was :— New College, Magdalen, Balliol, University, Trinity, Worcester, Christ Church, Brasenose, Merton, Pembroke, and Keble. After the exciting contest for the headship of the river on the previous evening great interest was taken in the two leading boats — New College and Magdalen. For some distance New College easily maintained their position, but on emerging from the Gut Magdalen began to overhaul them in brilliant style, and ran into them opposite the University Boathouse. Balliol gave way to University at the Red Post, Trinity were caught by Worcester at the crossing, Christ Church were displaced by Brasenose at the Long Bridges, and Pembroke secured Merton at the Weir's Bridge.
Delightful weather prevailed at Oxford on Saturday and there was an unusually large number of spectators at the eights.The second division started in the following order :— Keble, Exeter, Hertford, Lincoln, Corpus, Queen's, Wadham, Oriel, St. Catherine's, Jesus, and St. John's. At the start Keble maintained their position, but under the Willows Exeter gained considerably, and only about a yard separated the boats as the barges were approached. After passing the boathouse, Keble drew away and finished with just over a quarter of a length to the good. Lincoln overtook Hertford near the Long Bridges, Oriel bumped Wadham at the Freewater Stone; and Jesus succeeded in overhauling St. Catherine's under the Willows.

Magdalen had no difficulty in retaining the headship of the river and New College were in no danger from University. There was a capital race between Balliol and Worcester. From the Long Bridges Worcester gained rapidly and were within a few yards at the boathouse, but from this point Balliol showed improved form and passed the flag about three yards in front. Trinity proved no match for Brasenose and were compelled to acknowledge defeat at the Freewater Stone. Pembroke succeeded in making their fourth bump in the three days' racing by catching Christ Church near the Weirs Bridge.
The weather was everything that could be desired at Oxford last evening, and the attendance on the college barges and banks of the Isis was again very large. In the two divisions there were seven bumps.The second division started in the following order :— Keble, Exeter, Lincoln, Hertford, Corpus, Queen's, Oriel, Wadham, Jesus, St. Catherine's, and St. John's. An exciting struggle took place between Exeter and Lincoln, which ended in the former's avoiding defeat by less than three yards. Hertford made another downward move, Corpus catching them at the Free-water stone. Queen's had to give way to Oriel just after passing the Boathouse. Wadham were displaced by Jesus at the Free-water stone, and St. John's placed St. Catherine's at the bottom of the list by running into them at the end of Iffley Reach.
The order of starting in the first division was :— Magdalen, New College, University, Balliol, Worcester, Brasenose, Trinity, Pembroke, Christ Church, Merton, and Keble. The greatest excitement was caused by the closeness of the race between the two leading boats, but in the struggle for the headship Magdalen managed to retain their position, though with less than a quarter of a length to spare. No.6 in the Worcester boat caught a crab, and they were bumped by Brasenose at the Free-water stone. Pembroke continued their upward course by displacing Trinity shortly after passing the Weirs bridge, and Merton caught Christ Church at the crossing, after missing a shot at them at Long Bridges.
The fifth day of the races was marked by a continuation of fine weather, and there was no diminution in the very large number of spectators. There were two bumps in the second division and three in the first.In the second division ther order was :— Keble, Exeter, Lincoln, Corpus, Hertford, Oriel, Queen's, Jesus, Wadham, St. John's, and St. Catherine's. There was a close struggle between Keble, Exeter, and Lincoln, which terminated in Exeter being overtaken at the Oriel barge, Keble at the time being only three-quarters of a length clear. Oriel made another upward move by catching Hertford while coming out of the gut, and Queen's and St. John's both narrowly escaped losing their places, being but a quarter of a length from Jesus and St. Catherine's respectively.
The following was the order in the first division :— Magdalen, New College, University, Balliol, Brasenose, Worcester, Pembroke, Trinity, Merton, Christ Church, and Keble. The three leading boats maintained their distances, but Brasenose rapidly overhauled Balliol, and made the bump at the Willows. Merton ran into Trinity at the gut. Under the Willows Keble drew closer to Christ Church, until at the boathouse only half a length separated them, and opposite their own barge No. 5 in the Christ Church boat caught a crab, so that Keble had no difficulty in running into them.
The races will terminate this evening.
The races were brought to a close yesterday evening in delightful weather. Magdalen finished at the head of the river, a position they last occupied in 1895.The second division started in the following order :— Christ Church, Lincoln, Exeter, Corpus, Oriel, Hertford, Queen's, Jesus, Wadham, St. John's, and St. Catherine's. After a good race Lincoln overtook Christ Church at the crossing. Corpus effected the downfall of Exeter soon after passing the Long Bridges, and Hertford gave into Queen's in the Gut.

Magdalen showed grand form, finishing fully three lengths in front of New College. There was only one bump in this division, Trinity giving way to Keble in the Gut. Worcester succeeded in getting within a quarter of a length of Balliol, and Pembroke were pressed by Merton. During the six nights' racing Pembroke and Oriel have each made five bumps Brasenose four, Lincoln and Jesus three each, Corpus and University two each, and Magdalen, Worcester, Merton, and Keble one each. Christ Church, Trinity and Hertford have each lost six places, St. Catherine's four, Balliol two, and New College, Exeter, Wadham, and St. John's one each. Queen's only retain the position they held at the start.
