The Eights at Oxford began yesterday. The weather was fine and there was a numerous attendance, all the college barges being crowded and both banks of the river being lined with spectators.The second division boats started in the following order :— Exeter, Worcester, Keble, Lincoln, Oriel, Jesus, Queen's, Hertford, St. Catherine's, Corpus, St. Edmund Hall, and Wadham. Exeter had no difficulty in keeping away from Worcester, who were bumped by Keble at the Long Bridges. Jesus were caught by Queen's in coming through the Gut; St. Catherine's were bumped by Corpus near the Free Ferry; and St. Edmund Hall were bumped by Wadham near the Weirs Bridge.
The first division started as follows :— New College, Magdalen, Christ Church, University, Balliol, Brasenose, Trinity, St. John's, Merton, Pembroke, and Exeter. After an exciting struggle New College were bumped by Magdalen at the New Cut. University bumped Christ Church at the Long Bridges, and St John's, through one of the crew catching a crab, were bumped by Merton opposite Keble barge. A close race ensued between Pembroke and Exeter, but the former drew away and finished a length to the good.
There was again a large number of spectators yesterday, and the weather was fine. Seven bumps were made, four in the second division and three in the first.The second division started in the following order :— Exeter, Keble, Worcester, Lincoln, Oriel, Queen's, Jesus, Hertford, Corpus, St. Catherine's, Wadham, and St. Edmund Hall. Keble gained on Exeter from the start and bumped under the Willows; Lincoln bumped Worcester opposite the New College barge; Queen's bumped Oriel coming out of the Gut, and near the same place Jesus were bumped by Hertford. Wadham drew up to St. Catherine's, but the latter reached the post safely.
The order in the first division was :— Magdalen, New College, University, Christ Church, Balliol, Brasenose, Trinity, Merton, St. John's, Pembroke, and Keble. New College were bumped by University near New College barge; St John's, who were bumped by Merton on Thursday, regained their position by bumping them at the Free Water stone, and Keble made a second bump in the afternoon by overtaking Pembroke at the Weirs-bridge.
With delightful weather and the prospect of a close race for the headship a large crowd gathered at the riverside on Saturday.The second division started in the following order :— Pembroke, Exeter, Lincoln, Worcester, Queen's, Oriel, Hertford, Jesus, Corpus, St. Catharine's, Wadham, and St. Edmund-hall. Pembroke were no match for Exeter, who came up rapidly from the start and made the bump before the Long Bridges were reached. Queen's bumped Worcester under the Willows. Hertford gained on Oriel, but the effort was not sustained, and a length separated the boats at the finish. Jesus were unable to escape Corpus, who bumped them at the Corporation Ferry. There was a good race between Wadham and St. Catharine's, only a quarter of a length dividing the boats when they passed the post.
In the first division the order of start was :— Magdalen, University, New College, Christ Church, Balliol, Brasenose, Trinity, St. John's, Merton, Keble, and Exeter. The struggle for the first place was followed with keen interest. At the Long Bridges Magdalen were leading by a length. University improved under the Willows, and spurted soon after passing the boathouse, but Magdalen displayed capital form, and finished three-quarters of a length in front. Balliol at one point got within a length of Christ Church, but fell away towards the finish. Keble made their fourth bump by overtaking Merton under the Willows.

In the six days 27 bumps were made, of which Keble made six, Corpus four, Queen's and Hertford three, and University and Wadham two. Worcester lost five places, Oriel, Jesus, and St. Catherine's three, New College, St. John's, and Pembroke two, and Christ Church and Trinity one.
