In spite of the cheerless weather an immense crowd of persons assembled at the riverside at Oxford last evening on the occasion of the opening of the University summer eight-oar races. The second division started in the following order :— Exeter, Pembroke, Lincoln, Queen's, Hertford, Corpus, Worcester, Oriel, Jesus, Wadham, St. Edmund Hall, and St. Catherine's. An exciting struggle took place between Exeter and Pembroke, only half a length dividing the boats at the Long Bridges. Pembroke then spurted and made the bump under the Willows. Corpus overtook Hertford opposite Rough's boathouse. Jesus quickly gained on Oriel, and succeeded in bumping them soon after passing the Ferry.
In the first division the order of starting was :— Magdalen, University, New College, Christ Church, Balliol, Brasenose, Keble, Trinity, Merton, St. John's, and Pembroke. Magdalen had improved on their starting distance when New College, who had pressed University from the start, succeeded in making the bump soon after passing the Freewater Stone. Trinity bumped Keble on entering the Gut; and Merton were overtaken by St. John's shortly before the Long Bridges were reached.
The weather was delightfully fine yesterday evening for the eight-oared races at Oxford, which were watched by a large number of spectators, including the Chinese High Commissioners and their suite, who were visiting Oxford. The second division started in the following order :— Pembroke, Exeter, Lincoln, Queen's, Corpus Christi, Hertford, Worcester, Jesus, Oriel, Wadham, St. Edmund Hall, and St. Catherine's. Pembroke were pressed by Exeter, but the latter at the Long Bridges were overtaken by Lincoln. Corpus caught Queen's under the Willows, and Worcester bumped Hertford at the Freewater Stone.
The order of starting in the first division was as follows :— Magdalen, New College, University, Christ Church, Balliol, Brasenose, Trinity, Keble, St. John's, Merton, and Pembroke. Christ Church bumped University at the Ferry. Trinity bumped Brasenose just before reaching the Long Bridges. St. John's overtook Keble in the Gut, and Pembroke displaced Merton opposite the Lincoln barge.
The Oxford University races were continued last evening, and the weather being more favourable than on Thursday there was a much larger attendance of visitors. In the second division three bumps were recorded. Lincoln caught Exeter at the Willows, Corpus defeated Queen's at the same spot, and Worcester bumped Hertford at the Free Ferry. In the first division Magdalen easily maintained the headship. Christ Church bumped University at the Free-water Stone. Brasenose fell to Trinity in the Gut, where also St. John's caught Keble, and Pembroke secured Merton at Keble Barge.
Some exciting racing took place on Saturday, and in all seven bumps were recorded. The second division started in the following order :— Merton, Lincoln, Exeter, Corpus Christi, Queen's, Worcester, Hertford, Jesus, Oriel, Wadham, St. Edmund Hall, and St. Catharine's. A severe struggle took place between Lincoln and Merton, the former making the bump under the Willows. Corpus overtook Exeter opposite the Red Post, Worcester lowered the colours of Queen's under the Willows, and Jesus displaced Hertford at the entrance to the Gut. Oriel, Wadham, St. Edmund Hall, and St. Catharine's were consequently the only boats left to row the full course. St. Edmund Hall were hard pressed by St. Catharine's and at the finish there was not much space between the boats.
The order of the start in the first division was :— Magdalen, New College, Christ Church, University, Balliol, Trinity, Brasenose, St. John's, Keble, Pembroke, and Lincoln. Magdalen were at no time in danger of losing the headship. Trinity pressed Balliol early in the race, and effected the bump under the Willows, Brasenose were compelled to give way to St. John's at the Corporation Ferry, and a fine struggle took place between Keble, Pembroke, and Lincoln. At the Long Bridges only about a length separated each of them. Pembroke caught Keble opposite the Exeter barge.
Great interest was taken in the racing at Oxford on Saturday. There was no change in the position of the three leading boats, nor does this seem probable, for Magdalen kept their place without difficulty, and Christ Church never got near enough to New College to cause them any anxiety. St. John's, again showing good pace, gained another place at the expense of Brasenose and Pembroke, Lincoln, Corpus, and Worcester all improved their records. All the bumps again took place below the Cherwell. In the second division Lincoln secured Merton under the Willows, Corpus bumped Exeter at the Red Post, and Jesus rapidly overhauled Hertford. The other boats rowed up easily without being extended. In the first division New College did not make any impression on Magdalen; Christchurch gained slightly on New College, but not sufficiently to cause the latter anxiety; and University, after being pressed by Balliol, paddled up alone, the latter being caught by Trinity; Brasenose lost ground to St. John's, and were run down at the Freewater Stone; Keble were also on the down line again, but they made a good fight with Pembroke, who made their bumps at the College barge.
In spite of the cold and cheerless weather there was again a large attendance at the eight-oar races at Oxford last evening. There were eight bumps, and in the second division all the boats changed place except two.The order of starting in the second division was as follows :— Lincoln, Merton, Corpus Christi, Exeter, Worcester, Queen's, Jesus, Hertford, Oriel, Wadham, St. Edmund Hall, and St. Catherine's. Corpus gained on Merton from the start and made their bump under the Willows. Exeter were bumped by Worcester soon after passing the Long Bridges; Queen's were bumped by Jesus, after a severe struggle, at the Red Post; Oriel bumped Hertford opposite Balliol barge; and St. Catherine's, who had pressed St. Edmund Hall rightly [sic], made their bump under the Willows.
The order of starting in the first division was :— Magdalen, New College, Christ Church, University, Trinity, Balliol, St. John's, Brasenose, Pembroke, Keble, and Lincoln. Trinity went off at a fast stroke, and bumped University at the Corporation ferry. Pembroke bumped Brasenose oppsite the Oriel barge, and Lincoln bumped Keble in front of the Keble barge.
No fewer than eight bumps took place yesterday in the Oxford Summer Eights. The bumps in the second division took place before the boats had reached the long bridges. Lincoln had not to distress themselves, and came out of the gut a long way in front of Merton, who had to give way to Corpus at the Willows. Worcester caught Exeter before the crossing, and Queen's also met more than their match in Jesus. Oriel, who had lost a place last week, recovered at the expense of Hertford, and St. Edmund Hall were overtaken by St. Catherine's under the Willows. In the first division Magdalen kept their place without difficulty, and although New College lost some ground to Christ Church, they were never in danger of being caught. University had to lower their colours to Trinity at the Freewater Stone. After an exciting struggle, Balliol got home three-quarters of a length from St. John's, and after an equally hard race Pembroke just managed to overhaul Brasenose; whilst Keble fell to Lincoln just after passing the boathouse.
The second division started yesterday in the following order :— Keble, Corpus, Merton, Worcester, Exeter, Jesus, Queen's, Oriel, Hertford, Wadham, St. Catharine's, and St. Edmund Hall. A splendid race took place between Keble and Corpus, the former finishing a yard in front. Worcester were within two yards of Merton at the Red Post, but from this point they fell away. Jesus bumped Exeter by the Corporation Ferry, and Oriel bumped Queen's near the Free Water Stone. The order of starting in the first division was :— Magdalen, New College, Christ Church, Trinity, University, Balliol, St. John's, Pembroke, Brasenose, Lincoln, and Keble. Although there was some interesting racing, no bumps took place in this division.
As was only to be expected, there was a decided falling off in the number of bumps in the Oxford Summer Eights yesterday. Indeed, only two took place. Keble succeeded in escaping Corpus by the narrowest possible margin, whilst Worcester flattered only to deceive, Merton getting away at the finish. Exeter had their boat baldy injured, and had to return home on foot, and in the St. Edmund Hall boat the bow man fainted, and they were unable to row through. In the first division there was not a single bump. In the second Jesus ran Exeter down near the Ferry with such force as to stave the boat in and Queen's fell victims to Oriel on entering the Gut.
The University eight-oar races at Oxford terminated last evening. In spite of the fact that the weather was unfavourable, rain falling heavily, there was a very large gathering at the riverside. The Second Division started in the following order :— Keble, Corpus, Merton, Worcester, Jesus, Exeter, Oriel, Queen's, Hertford, Wadham, St. Catherine's, and St. Edmund Hall. There was some exciting racing. Corpus pressed Keble the greater part of the distance, but were not successful until within a few yards of the finish, when, by a fine spurt, they made the bump opposite the University barge. Merton were behind, and before Keble and Corpus could get clear, Merton fouled Keble and were unable to pass the post. Worcester, who were pressing at the time of collision, cleared the obstruction, and so gained the bump. After a good race between Wadham and St. Catherine's, the latter made their bump in front of St. John's barge, about 30 yards from the finish.
The First Division started as follows :— Magdalen, New College, Christ Church, Trinity, University, Balliol, St. John's, Pembroke, Brasenose, Lincoln, and Corpus. Magdalen retained the headship without difficulty, passing the flag three lengths in front of New College. University struggled home a few feet only to the good. Pembroke bumped St. John's opposite the boathouse, and Lincoln bumped Brasenose under the Willows.
Thirty-five bumps were made in the six days' racing. Pembroke and Corpus made five each, and Trinity, Lincoln, Worcester, and Jesus four each. Keble, Merton and Exeter lost five places each, Brasenose, Queen's, and Hertford four each, and University three.
Oxford University Summer Eights were concluded yesterday. Magdalen were never troubled by New College and must be regarded as a fast crew. Pembroke worked their way into the first division, and made five bumps, but whether they would have caught St. John's had the latter not had to reorganise their crew, is a moot point. Corpus divided the honours with Pembroke, as they also made five bumps, whilst Trinity, Worcester, and Jesus were credited with four each. In the second division Corpus, after a very hard struggle, overtook Keble opposite the University barge, the force of the impact being so great that the Corpus bows were driven on to the Keble stern. Jesus were a quarter of a length behind Worcester, and Exeter were well clear of Oriel, who were given little anxiety by Queen's. St. Catherine's, after a very keen race, managed to bump Wadham. Of the first division boats, Magdalen finished three lengths to the good. Christ Church were one and a half length behind. University got home by a third of a length from Balliol, Pembroke caught St. John's opposite the boathouse, whilst Lincoln overtook Brasenose.
