The summer eight-oar races were begun at Oxford yesterday afternoon in delightful weather: the attendance of visitors was unusually large, and the scene on the river was animated and brilliant. Thirty-two crews entered, an increase of one on last year and ten colleges were represented by second crews. The third division started in the following order :— Trinity II, Magdalen II, Queen's, Hertford, St. John's II, University II, Lincoln II, Brasenose II, St. Edmund Hall, St. Catharine's, Oriel II, and Balliol II. From start to finish there was an exciting race for the headship in this division; only a few feet separated the boats at the Long Bridges, and at the College Barge Magdalen were overlapping. Trinity then made a great effort and succeeded in passing the flag a few feet in front. University II bumped St. John's II just after passing the Freewater Stone, and near the same place Lincoln II were bumped by Brasenose II. Balliol II bumped Oriel II soon after passing the Ferry.

First Division — Order of Starting — Magdalen, New College, Christ Church, Balliol, St. John's, Brasenose, Trinity, Corpus, Merton, Wadham, and University. Immense interest was taken in the fight for the headship. New College had the advantage of the services of Bourne, who stroked the Oxford crew. He went off with considerable dash, and it was quickly evident that New College were gradually gaining. It was not, however, until the boat-house was reached that New College made their bump. St. John's got to within a quarter of a length of Balliol. University succeeded in making their second bump by overtaking Wadham near the Freewater Stone. The races will be continued to-day.
The cup for the old Clinker Fours is this year to be given to the college which has the leading second eight [presumably awarded to Christ Church]
The Summer Eights racing opened at Oxford yesterday under most favourable conditions. There was an exciting struggle for the headship of the Third Division between Trinity II and Magdalen II, but the former retained their position by a few feet. At the same spot Lincoln II fell to Brasenose II, whilst Balliol II caught Oriel II at Free Water Stone.

They started at the bottom of the division, and, although they did not succeed in catching University [II] yesterday, they altogether registered five bumps.
In the second division Christ Church passed to the top by bumping Merton near the Long Bridges; whilst Wadham once more lost a place — to Pembroke. Other bumps made possessed little interest after the settling of the foremost places.
