Pembroke planning to bump Oriel off course
By a CorrespondentThe Oxford inter-collegiate rowing event starting on the Isis today promises to be an exciting four days. Kind weather has allowed more time for training and a high standard is expected. Pembroke's men are hoping to steal the Headship from Oriel, while Pembroke's women will be fighting to stay ahead of the pack, led by Merton.
Farther down the field, new talent may boost the chances of Magdalen and St Anne's men and the women of Queen's and Keble. Other promising boats include Worcester's women and Trinity's men.
Pembroke pull off historic double
By a CorrespondentPembroke created a piece of rowing history on the first day of Oxford University Summer Eights on the Isis yesterday when their first eights finished at the head of the men's and women's top divisions.
The success by the men, who bumped Oriel opposite the shell of the burnt-out University Boathouse, came as no surprise. They pressed Oriel heavily last year and it completed an outstanding day for Pembroke, whose four other crews in the men's divisions also made bumps.
The win in the women's first division was another closely fought encounter between the top three crews. Pembroke finished a metre clear of Merton, who crossed the finishing line a similar distance ahead of third-placed New College.
Pembroke hold off challenge from Merton
By a CorrespondentThere were no changes at the top of the men's and womens first divisions on the second day of Oxford University Summer Eights on the Isis yesterday.
In the women's division, chief interest centred on whether Merton, who finished a metre behind Pembroke on Wednesday, could catch them at the second attempt. Merton closed to half a length along the Green Bank but they could not sustain the challenge and Pembroke pulled away to finish a length ahead.
Pembroke, who moved to the top of the men's first division on Wednesday after bumping Oriel, were hard-pressed to retain the headship. Oriel closed to a third of a length at The Gut but Pembroke held off their challenge.
Merton concede ground to New College
By a CorrespondentNew College made their first bump on the third day of the Oxford University Summer Eights on the Isis yesterday. They caught Merton alongside the boathouses to move into second place behind Pembroke, who comfortably rowed over at the head of the women's first division.
Lower down the division, St Hilda's and Keble lost the opportunity to earn their blades after failing to make a bump and rowing over.
There was no change at the top of the men's first division. The leading four crews rowed over and the only movement over the past three days remains Pembroke's bump on Oriel on Wednesday. Exeter and Christ Church will look to make inroads in the final day of racing today.
Pembroke created rowing history on Saturday on the last day of the Oxford University Summer Eights. Their men's and women's first crews won the headship of the two top divisions, a feat never achieved by a college in the same year.
Oriel went into Eights 2003 looking to extend their reign at the top to an unprecedented eight years, however it was not to be, and a Pembroke crew containing one Blue Boat, two Isis and a lightweight oarsman bumped outside OUBC on the Wednesday and regained the headship they had lost to Oriel in 1997 [actually 1996]. It was not all plain sailing for Pembroke, however, as Oriel closed to approximately ten feet on Thursday. That was as close as they were to get, and Pembroke went on to end the week Head of the River.Elsewhere in the first division, a potentially strong Magdalen crew managed three bumps, to bring themselves up to fourth. Balliol gained spoons having slumped from fifth to ninth, while Wadham, at head of the second division, made it 16 row-overs in the last eight days of summer eights, being unable to bump, and remaining unbumped in the last two years. Trinity ended the week two places behind them in third, having won blades.
The women's 1st division saw Pembroke remain at the top for the fourth year, giving them both Eights headships. New bumped up to second, displacing Merton on the Friday, while Keble ended the week up four in 11th place, bringing their total to up 15 in the last four years. Queen's managed to bump five times during the week, finishing in 15th. Both Osler-Green and Univ got spoons, falling four each to finish tenth and 12th respectively while LMH ended the week down six in 18th.
