After a confident performance in Torpids by
Oriel, a tough headship battle was keenly awaited at
the top of Men's division one. This however failed to materialise as a
triumphant
Magdalen shook off any opposition to comfortably
retain the top spot for a third [?] consecutive year, leaving
Oriel to battle off a strong
Pembroke eight, and the top three spots unchanged.
Balliol came to join the top four having bumped
New College and
Exeter on the first two days, both of whom were hit
later by a blade-winning
Christ Church crew ending up in fifth place. No blades
were awarded in division two, although
Queen's and
Worcester put in strong performances to move up three
places each.
After claiming the women's headship in
Torpids,
New College only had to hang on to the top spot to
gain a coveted double headship. This they did with aplomb, rowing clear as
first
Pembroke and then
St Edmund Hall tried to catch them. The only big
movers in the first division were
Merton and
St Catherine's, who were awarded spoons, whilst
Hertford rose a total of four [?]
places to enter the
first division and deny a very fast
Oriel blades on the first day by
overbumping.
The success stories of divsion two were
St John's and
Exeter, both of whom entered the division with two
bumps on their days as sandwich boats,
giving them a total of five bumps each. Special mention must go to
St John's second eight, going up ten [?]
places to win blades in style.
