Summer VIIIs was, as always, an excellent showcase for the rowing talent of
Oxford, with the addition of the returning Blues rowers invigorating the
colleges they went to, and spurring on those colleges who weren't fortunate
enough to have some to train even harder, with impressive results being
generated all round.
In the top flight
Balliol M1 were able to mount an impressive, and
successful, assault on the Headship, with
St Edmund Hall W1 defying anyone to take the headship
from them. Both top divisions were subject to many changes as crews vied for
bumps, with the hours of training being rewarded for the lucky few. In the lower
divisions, the same effort was seen on all fronts, with crews ranging from those
who had been rowing and training together for years, to crews of gifted
novices...
to crews of people who just realised that rowing is actually the greatest sport
on earth, and wanted in on the action. The infamous beer crews once again did
not disappoint this year, both in terms of the comedy provided, and even with
some half-decent rowing in the bargain from some of them.
Summer VIIIs is always the pinnacle of college rowing, with everything needed,
from talented oarsmen and coxes on the water to the cheering crowds on the
bank. This year was no different, and was a proud day for many in Oxford
rowing. The organising Race Committee did an excellent job, and all thanks to
them for providing us all with an event we can all look back on, and be proud.
