Exeter were absent at a funeral, but
allowed to keep their place.
It seems likely that the funeral in question was that of
George Gibbs,
an Exeter student who
drowned on 3rd June while bathing at
the Weirs (near the Gut).
The Times of 5 June 1846 contains a report on the inquest.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Robert Peel, the House of Commons
of the United Kingdom votes to repeal the Corn Laws by passing an Importation
Bill, replacing the colonial mercantile trade system with free trade.
