In 1852 the Torpids took their present position as feeders to the Eights, being transferred, 'at the request of the crews,' to the Lent Term. Up to this year, being only second boats, they were thought so little of that, even when head, the names of the crew have only been recorded in one solitary instance. With the change, their importance seems to have been realized at once, as we have been able to get the names of the head boat for every year from this time, and the light-hearted practice of taking off and putting on again [ie missing days' racing], which has been so characteristic of the early Torpids, ceases. Thus, almost by accident, after typical English fashion, these races have tumbled into their true place.
