  The distance between the boat this year [for Eights] was fixed at 130 ft., 'because so few bumps had been made in the Torpids,' though strangely enough the rule was not to affect the Torpids.

• The only previous reference in Sherwood is in the 1840 rules when the distance is specified as 100 ft, so at some point, possibly only for the 1864 Torpids, the distance must have been increased to over 130 ft.
