The large number of people who went down to the river at Oxford yesterday afternoon to see the beginning of the Torpids showed the great deal of interest that is taken in the races. Although cold, the weather was favourable for rowing. Thirty crews competed against 28 last year.The third division rowed first, the boats starting in the following order :— Magdalen 2, Oriel, Trinity 2, Lincoln, St. John's, Wadham, Keble 2, Jesus, St. Catharine's, St. Edmund Hall, and New College 3. Lincoln overtook Trinity 2 just before reaching the Long Bridges, and St. Edmund Hall were bumped by New College 3 near the Freewater Stone. The other boats were well apart.
In the second division the order of starting was :— Hertford, Keble, Christ Church, Balliol 2, New College 2, Exeter, Brasenose 2, Worcester, Christ Church 2, Queen's, and Magdalen 2. There was some exciting racing in this division. Keble were hard pressed by Christ Church, and the latter in turn found it a difficult matter to escape Balliol 2. At the finish only a couple of yards separated the boats, and Balliol 2 were but three yards behind Christ Church, while at the Cherwell New College 2 overlapped Balliol 2. Brasenose 2 succeeded in displacing Exeter near the Long Bridges, and almost at the same place Magdalen 2 caught Queen's.
The order of starting in the first division was :— New College, Brasenose, Balliol, Pembroke, Magdalen, Trinity, University, Merton, Corpus, and Hertford. The leading crew had no difficulty in maintaining their position. Pembroke only escaped from Magdalen after a severe struggle, University lowered the colours of Trinity in the Gut, and Corpus were overtaken by Hertford at the Red Post.
The second day's racing at Oxford yesterday was favoured with delightful weather, and there was a very large attendance.The third division started in the following order :— Queen's, Oriel, Lincoln, Trinity 2, St. John's<, Wadham, Keble 2, Jesus, St. Catherine's, New College 3, and St. Edmund Hall. From the outset Oriel were closely pressed by Lincoln, who succeeded in making their second bump opposite the Long Bridges. Trinity 2 were in great danger from St. John's. The latter overlapped as they approached the barges, but Trinity cleverly avoided defeat. St. Catherine's were overtaken by New College 3 early in the race.
In the second division the order of starting was :— Corpus, Keble, Christ Church 1, Balliol 2, New College 2, Brasenose 2, Exeter, Worcester, Christ Church 2, Magdalen 2, and Queen's. Keble again experienced a hard struggle to escape Christ Church, a quarter of a length separating the boats at the finish, only the same distance at one time dividing Balliol 2 from Christ Church. Worcester bumped Exeter before the Long Bridges were reached, and Christ Church 2 gave way to Magdalen 2 soon after passing the freewater stone.
The first division started in the following order :— New College, Basenose, Balliol, Pembroke, Magdalen, University, Trinity, Merton, Hertford, and Corpus. There was a splendid race between Pembroke, Magdalen, and University, the three boats being very close to each other at the willows. Amid much excitement Magdalen, who at the time were in imminent danger of being bumped themselves, overtook Pembroke at the crossing. Merton were overhauled by Hertford under the green bank.
The weather was dull at Oxford on Saturday when the third day's Torpid races took place, and the wind blowing down stream somewhat interfered with the crews.The Third Division started as follows :— Queen's, Lincoln, Oriel, Trinity 2, St. John's, Wadham, Keble 2, Jesus, New College 3, St. Catharine's, and St. Edmund Hall. Lincoln succeeded in making their third bump, overtaking Queen's before they were out of the gut. Trinity 2, who experienced a hard struggle in escaping St. John's on Friday, were compelled to acknowledge defeat at the Red Post. New College 3 were again successful, depriving Jesus of their position just before reaching the Long Bridges.
Second Division. — Order of Starting :— Corpus, Keble, Christchurch, Balliol 2, New College 2, Brasenose 2, Worcester, Exeter, Magdalen 2, Christchurch 2, and Lincoln. Christchurch gained on Keble, and about a length separated the boats at the finish. Balliol 2 were hard pressed by New College 2, the latter getting within a third of a length. Exeter were caught by Magdalen 2 in Iffley reach, and Christchurch 2 lowered their colours to Lincoln at the Weirs Bridge, this being the fourth success of Lincoln in three days.
First Division. — Order of Starting :— New College, Brasenose, Balliol, Magdalen, Pembroke, University, Trinity, Hertford, Merton, and Corpus. New College had no difficulty in maintaining their place at the head of the river. Balliol gained on Brasenose, and got within a quarter of a length at the finish. Pembroke were overtaken by University under the willows, this being the only bump in this division.
There was a strong south-westerly wind blowing whilst the Torpid races at Oxford were in progress yesterday afternoon, and the water was rough.The Third Division started in the following order :— Christ Church 2, Queen's, Oriel, St. John's, Trinity 2, Wadham, Keble 2, New College 3, Jesus, St. Catharine's, and St. Edmund Hall. Christ Church 2 were hard pressed by Queen's, but after a splendid race the former finished half a length to the good. Keble 2 succeeded in overtaking Wadham opposite Worcester barge, this being the only bump in the division.
Second Division.— Order of starting :— Corpus, Keble, Christ Church, Balliol 2, New College 2, Brasenose 2, Worcester, Magdalen 2, Exeter, Lincoln, Christ Church 2. Corpus easily maintained their position. Christ Church gained considerably on Keble, getting to within three quarters of a length at the finish. There was a splended race between Balliol 2 and New College 2, the Wykehamists [New College] getting to within two or three yards. Worcester were defeated by Magdalen 2 just before reaching the Long Bridges, whilst Lincoln succeeded in making their fifth bump by overhauling Exeter at the Weirs Bridge.
First Division.— Order of Starting :— New College, Brasenose, Balliol, Magdalen, University, Pembroke, Trinity, Hertford, Merton, and Corpus. The first two boats came up their relative distance apart, and a magnificent race was witnessed between Balliol, Magdalen, and University. At the Long Bridges a short distance only separated them, and Magdalen, in their anxiety to avoid being caught, attempted to bump Balliol, but failed. Balliol, profiting by the mistake, got away, and University, coming up in fine style, rapidly overhauled Magdalen under the Willows and were victorious at the Red Post. No. 2 in the Trinity boat unluckily broke his oar shortly before reaching the Long Bridges, and the mishap led to the crew being overtaken by Hertford at the Oriel barge.

In the first division the order of starting was :— New College, Brasenose, Balliol, University, Magdalen, Pembroke, Hertford, Trinity, Merton, and Corpus. Balliol worked hard to get away from University, and succeeded in gaining on Brasenose, but University came up in capital style, and bumped at the Willows. The remaining boats were their distance apart.
The races will be concluded this evening.
