Favourable weather prevailed at Oxford yesterday afternoon on the opening day of the University Torpid eight-oar races, and there was a large attendance on the river banks and in the college barges. The number of boats entered this year is 20. A rather strong wind blew down stream and interfered to some extent with the rowing. Seven bumps were made and there was some very exciting racing. New College, who have retained the headship of the river since 1900, were bumped amid much excitement by University.The third division started in the following order :— Christ Church II, Magdalen II, Brasenose II, University II, Queen's, Keble II, Worcester, St. Catherine's, Jesus, Wadham, Trinity II. Magdalen II overhauled Christ Church II at the Red Post, and Brasenose II, who were close up, were unable to avoid a collision with Magdalen and lost a place to University II. Jesus were overtaken by Wadham at the Freewater Stone.
In the second division the order was :— Balliol II, Lincoln, Exeter, Merton, Keble, St. John's, Hertford, Corpus, Oriel, and Magdalen II. There was a close race between the first three boats, and at the Red Post Exeter caught Lincoln at the moment when they were making their effort to bump Balliol II. Corpus easily overtook Hertford at the Freewater Stone.
The first division order of starting was :— New College, University, Brasenose, Magdalen, Balliol, Trinity, Pembroke, New College II, Christ Church, and Balliol II. University from the start gained rapidly on New College, and, after failing in one attempt, they succeeded just before reaching the boathouse in making their bump. Trinity were bumped by Pembroke while coming through the Gut.
The weather was beautifully fine yesterday on the second day of the University torpid races, but a rather strong westerly wind caused a considerable amount of inconvenience to the crews. The attendance of spectators was larger than on the first day.The third division of boats started in the following order :— Magdalen II, Christ Church II, University II, Brasenose II, Queen's, Keble II, Worcester, St. Catherine's, Wadham, Jesus, and Trinity II. University II gained rapidly on Christ Church II from the start and caught them before reaching the Gut. A better race resulted between Brasenose II and Queen's, the latter not making their bump until after passing the Freewater Stone. Jesus were bumped by Trinity II near the Free Ferry.
In the second division the order was :— Balliol II, Exeter, Lincoln, Merton, Keble, St. John's, Corpus, Hertford, Oriel, and Magdalen II. There were three bumps also in this division. Exeter follwed up their success on the opening day by bumping Balliol II at the Free Ferry, while Lincoln were caught at the Red Post by Merton, and near the same spot Corpus gained another success by overtaking St. John's.
The order of the first division boats was :— University, New College, Brasenose, Magdalen, Balliol, Pembroke, Trinity, New College II, Christ Church, and Exeter. University easily maintained the leading position, but New College narrowly escaped being again caught as at the Red Post Brasenose were close up. Trinity experienced further disaster, New College II overtaking them on coming out of the Gut.
A strong gusty south-westerly wind sprang up on Saturday afternoon after some showers of rain. There were again seven bumps made.The third division boats started in the following order :— Magdalen II, University II, Christ Church II, Queen's, Brasenose II, Keble II, Worcester, St. Catharine's, Wadham, Trinity [II], and Jesus. University II scored another success by overtaking Magdalen II on coming out of the Gut, and Queen's did likewise by catching Christ Church II near the Freewater stone. A close struggle took place between St. Catharine's and Wadham, the latter overlapping under the Willows and making a shot for a bump. St. Catharine's, however, continued on their course, evidently not recognizing defeat, and, although Wadham made a vigorous effort to overtake them again, they reached the post a quarter of a length to the good.
In the second division the order was :— Exeter, Balliol II, Merton, Lincoln, Keble, Corpus, St. John's, Hertford, Oriel, and University II. Balliol II were again unfortunate, Merton overtaking them as the boats came out of the Gut. A close race ensued between Lincoln and Keble for some distance, but the former succeeded in keeping away, and finished a short distance in front. Oriel were quickly caught by University II who made their bump while coming through the Gut, and thus scored their second success that afternoon.
The first division started in the following order :— University, New College, Brasenose, Magdalen, Balliol, Pembroke, New College II, Trinity, Christ Church, and Exeter. New College experienced another defeat, Brasenose, after a fine race, bumping them at the Willows. New College II, however, scored another success by catching Pembroke at the Willows. Trinity were bumped by Christ Church at the Freewater stone.
A claim for a bump was made in the third division by Wadham over St. Catharine's, and Corpus also claimed a bump over Keble on the ground that they started without their starting bung.
The claims made on Saturday for bumps by Corpus against Keble and by Wadham against St. Catherine's were decided yesterday. The claim by Wadham was allowed, and that by Corpus was disallowed. The weather yesterday was not so rough, but a bitterly cold wind prevailed.The third division started in the following order :— Oriel, Magdalen II, Queen's, Christ Church II, Brasenose II, Keble II, Worcester, Wadham, St. Catherine's, Trinity II, and Jesus. Queen's scored their third successive bump by overtaking Magdalen II at the Green bank. Christ Church II were bumped by Brasenose II while in the Gut, and St. Catherine's were caught soon after the start by Trinity II in Iffley Reach.
In the second division the order of starting was :— Exeter, Merton, Balliol II, Lincoln, Keble, Corpus, St. John's, Hertford, University II, and Oriel. Balliol II had to give way to Lincoln under the Willows, the latter crew being at the time in danger from Keble, who afterwards were overtaken by Corpus. Hertford were caught at the boathouse by University II.

There were exciting races between New College and Magdalen and Pembroke and Christ Church, only very short distances separating them. One bump only was made, Exeter easily overtaking Trinity at the Corporation ferry.

Oriel were bumped under the Willows by Queen's, and Brasenose II overtook Magdalen II at the Red Post. Worcester reached the post a bare third of a length in front of Wadham.
In the second division the order was :— Trinity, Merton, Lincoln, Balliol II, Corpus, Keble, St. John's, University II, Hertford, and Queen's. Trinity were bumped by Merton at the Red Post after an exciting race. Balliol II were only a short distance in front of Corpus at the finish. Queen's were once more successful, bumping Hertford at the Weirs-bridge.
The order of starting in the first division was :— University, Brasenose, New College, Magdalen, Balliol, New College II, Pembroke, Christ Church, Exeter, Merton. The first four boats maintained their respective distances, and Balliol were well away from New College II, but Pembroke were bumped by Christ Church at the Willows.
The Torpids were finished yesterday. In spite of a bitterly cold north-east wind, there was a large attendance of spectators. Three bumps only were made, two in the second division and one in the first.In the third division the order of starting was :— Hertford, Oriel, Brasenose II, Magdalen II, Christ Church II, Keble II, Worcester, Wadham, Trinity II, St. Catherine's, and Jesus. Brasenose II succeeded in getting to within half a length of Oriel, and a similar distance separated Christ Church II and Keble II.
The order in the second division was as follows :— Merton, Trinity, Lincoln, Balliol II, Corpus, Keble, St. John's, University II, Queen's, and Hertford. Corpus who were without the services of two of their men and rowed a couple of substitutes, were bumped by Keble, whom they had bumped on the night before. University II made their sixth bump by overtaking St. John's at the Weirs-bridge.
The first division started in the following order :— University, Brasenose, New College, Magdalen, Balliol, New College II, Christ Church, Pembroke, Exeter, and Merton. A capital race took place between New College and Magdalen, the latter making a shot for a bump at the Cherwell. But it failed, and New College reached home with barely a quarter of a length to the good. Exeter gained rapidly on Pembroke and bumped them on coming out of the Gut.
In the six days 37 bumps were made, of which University II made six, Queen's five, Exeter four, Merton and Corpus three.
