The Torpid races were begun at Oxford yesterday, before a large number of spectators and in beautiful weather.In the third division Keble II bumped Jesus at the Cherwell, and Christ Church III were caught by St. Catherine's before they reached the Red Post. Queen's II bumped St. Edmund Hall near the Free Ferry.
There were four bumps in the second division. Corpus Christi caught Oriel near the Long Bridges, Queen's I bumped Keble I at Rough's Boathouse, Wadham bumped St. John's II at the Free Ferry, and Lincoln caught Hertford at the Cherwell.
The order of starting in the first division was :— Christ Church I, Magdalen, Balliol, New College, University, Christ Church II, Worcester, Brasenose, Magdalen II, New College II, St. John's I, and Corpus Christi. Christ Church I easily kept the headship of the river but Balliol were bumped by New College at the Willows. Christ Church II were bumped by Worcester at the Long Bridges, and Corpus Christi obtained their second bump by catching St. John's at the Boathouse.
The Oxford University torpid or fixed-seat eight-oar races commenced yesterday afternoon and were witnessed by a record crowd. The number of boats entered is the same as last year — thirty-six — and the races are rowed in three divisions with an hour's interval between each. The Torpids were continued at Oxford yesterday.In the third division, St. Catharine's bumped Jesus near the Exeter Barge, after one of the Jesus crew had caught a crab, Queen's II bumped Lincoln II at the Freewater Stone, and St. Edmund Hall were caught by Worcester II before reaching the Long Bridges.
The second divsion also produced three bumps. Merton bumped Oriel near the Long Bridges, Exeter caught Pembroke near the University Boathouse, and Lincoln bumped St. John's II near the Freewater Stone.
The order of starting in the first division was :— Christ Church I, Magdalen I, New College I, Balliol, University, Worcester, Christ Church II, Brasenose, Magdalen II, New College II, Corpus Christi, and St. John's I. Christ Church I were well away from Magdalen I when the latter were bumped by New College I at the University Boathouse, and Worcester bumped University at the Long Bridges. Brasenose, after missing Christ Church II once, obtained their bump near the Oriel Barge, and Corpus Christi bumped New College II just after passing the Free Ferry.
There was again a large attendance on Saturday for the third day of the Torpids, and in each of the three divisions there was some interesting racing. There were eight bumps made in the course of the afternoon.The order of starting in the third division was :— Hertford, Keble II, St. Catharine's, Jesus, Christ Church III, Wadham II, Brasenose II, University II, Queen's II, Lincoln II, Worcester II, St. Edmund Hall, and Exeter II. [Div 3] An exciting race ensued between Jesus, Christ Church III, and Wadham [II], a few feet only separating, but no bump occurred.

Oriel were bumped for the fourth time, when they were caught by Queen's I near the Free Ferry, and Lincoln I bumped Pembroke at the Willows.
The order of starting in the First Division was :— Christ Church I, New College I, Magdalen I, Worcester I, Balliol I, University I, Brasenose I, Magdalen II, Christ Church II, Corpus Christi, Merton, and New College II. Christ Church I maintained their position as Head of the river without difficulty, but Christ Church II were bumped by Corpus Christi at the Freewater Stone.

[Div 2] There was a ding-dong race between the first three boats all the way, and only a few yards separated them at the finish. Oriel suffered their fourth defeat through being caught by Queen's near the Free Ferry. Balliol II escaped Exeter by an eighth of a length. Pembroke were again unfortunate, Lincoln displacing them at the Willows.

St. Catharine's caught Keble II just opposite the St. John's Barge, and Wadham II bumped Christ Church III at the Free Ferry. Brasenose II and Queen's II had a very close race, which resulted in the former escaping by a few yards.
The Second Division started as follows :— New College II, St. John's, Trinity, Queen's I, Oriel, Keble I, Balliol II, Exeter I, Wadham I, Lincoln I, Pembroke, St. John's II, and Hertford. Oriel went down for the fifth time during the racing, Keble I bumping them near the Long Bridges.
The order of starting in the First Division was :— Christ Church I, New College I, Magdalen I, Worcester I, Balliol I, University I, Brasenose I, Magdalen II, Corpus Christi, Christ Church II, Merton, and New College II. Christ Church I easily held their position, but Magdalen I were bumped by Worcester I opposite the Brasenose Barge. Magdalen II were bumped by Corpus Christi at the Free Ferry, and near the same spot Christ Church II were caught by Merton.
The races will be brought to a close to-day.
[Div 3] Through No.2 in Keble boat having the misfortune to catch a crab, they were overtaken by St. Catharine's opposte the St. John's College barge.[Div 2] An exciting struggle ensued for the headship of the division, a few inches only separating St. John's from New College II opposite the University barge, but the former managed to get home by a few feet only.

Corpus Christi obtained their sixth bump when they caught Brasenose I along the Green Bank, and Merton bumped Magdalen II at the same point.
[Div 3] St. Catharine's were within a third of a length of Hertford at the finish.[Div 2] Exeter missed their shot at Balliol II at the Cherwell, but secured them opposite the St. John's College barge. Hertford were within a quarter of a length of St. John's II.
[Div 1] The leading boats passed the post quite two lengths to the good. Corpus Christi scored another success in overtaking Brasenose along the green bank. The latter had their boat sunk through being run into by Magdalen II in their fruitless effort to escape Merton.
Duruing the six days's racing the number of bumps made was forty-four. Corpus Christi gained six places, Merton and Worcester four, and Lincoln, St. Catharine's, Queen's II, and Worcester II three each. Christ Church II and Oriel each lost five places, and Pembroke, Jesus, and Christ Church III three each.
