The Oxford University Torpid Races were begun yesterday on the course between Iffley and Salter's Raft.The crews had to contend against a rather rough cross wind and a very strong current. The number of crews entered was 33, the same as last year, but there were two alterations, New College III boat being taken off and University adding a second boat. The number of bumps made in the three divisions was nine.
Third Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows :— Worcester II, Christ Church II, Hertford, Wadham II, St. Catherine's, St. Edmund Hall, Jesus, St. John's II, Brasenose II, Exeter II, Oriel II, and University II. Worcester II were gradually overhauled by Christ Church II from the start and were bumped at the Green Bank. Wadham II also lost to St. Catherine's from the beginning and were bumped before reaching the Long Bridges. Jesus gained on St. Edmund Hall for a considerable part of the course, but the latter from the Boathouse onward drew away and finished a length to the good. Oriel II lost their position to University II through one of their crew catching a crab at the Red Post.Second Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows :— Corpus, Pembroke, Oriel, Trinity, Queen's, Keble, New College II, Lincoln, St. John's, Exeter, Magdalen II, and Christ Church II. When nearing the Long Bridges Oriel gained rapidly on Pembroke and bumped them at the Green Bank. Queen's were quickly overtaken by Keble, the bump taking place before reaching the Free Ferry. Lincoln, after a good race, succeeded in bumping New College II shortly after passing the Weirs Bridge. Exeter gained on St. John's before getting to the Long Bridges. They were within half a length at the Green Bank and when overlapping they unsuccessfully attempted a bump at the [Red?] Post, but Exeter were successful in their second shot opposite the New College barge.First Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows :— Christ Church, University, Merton, Brasenose, Balliol, Magdalen, Wadham, New College, Worcester, Balliol II, and Corpus. An exciting struggle for the Headship of the River was witnessed. University were close up to Christ Church at the Red Post and, although the latter struggled hard they could not avert disaster, the bump taking place opposite their own barge. Balliol, after a good race, bumped Brasenose before reaching the Long Bridges. The remaining boats finished at about their starting distances apart.The races will be continued to-day.
The racing on the second day of the Oxford University Torpids was favoured with fine weather and attracted large numbers of spectators on the towpath and College barges. There were three bumps in each division.Third Division
The order of starting in this division was :— Christ Church II, Worcester II, Hertford, St. Catherine's, Wadham II, St. Edmund Hall, Jesus, St. John's II, Brasenose II, Exeter II, University II, and Oriel II. Worcester II were very quickly displaced by Hertford, who gained on them from the start and bumped them at the Freewater Stone. Wadham II were bumped by St. Edmund Hall before reaching the Long Bridges, and near the same place University II scored their second success by bumping Exeter.Second Division
The order of starting in this division was :— Corpus Christi, Oriel, Pembroke, Trinity, Keble, Queen's, Lincoln, New College II, Exeter, St. John's, Magdalen II, and Christ Church II. Keble bumped Trinity rather easily just after passing the Freewater Stone. Two bumps occurred before this point in the course was reached, Lincoln bumping Queen's and Exeter bumping New College II at the Free Ferry. For a long distance a very exciting struggle took place between St. John's and Magdalen II, the latter being within a quarter of a length at the Cherwell and within two yards at the finish.First Division
The order of starting was :— University, Christ Church, Merton, Balliol, Brasenose, Magdalen, Wadham, New College, Worcester, Balliol II, and Corpus Christi. University retained the headship with ease. Christ Church, who were displaced from the lead on Thursday, sustained another reverse, Merton bumping them near the Cherwell. Brasenose were quickly disposed of by Magdalen, who bumped them in Iffley Reach, and New College bumped Wadham at the Free Ferry.The races will be continued to-day.
The third day's racing of the Oxford University Torpids on Saturday afternoon was carried out in favourable weather, and some exciting racing was witnessed. The number of bumps recorded in the three divisions was again nine, the same as on the two previous days.Third Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows:— Christ Church II, Hertford, Worcester II, St. Catherine's, St. Edmund Hall, Wadham II, Jesus, St. John's II, Brasenose II, University II, Exeter II, and Oriel II. Christ Church II were pressed closely by Hertford throughout, and at the finish were only about two yards to the good. St. Catherine's gained rapidly on Worcester II and effected their bump shortly after passing the Weirs Bridge. Brasenose II were also bumped early in the race, University II overtaking them at the Free Ferry, and Exeter II went to the bottom of the list, Oriel II bumping them at the Willows.Second Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows :— Corpus Christi, Oriel, Pembroke, Keble, Trinity, Lincoln, Queen's, Exeter, New College II, St. John's, Magdalen II, and Christ Church II. Pembroke were bumped by Keble shortly after passing the Freewater Stone. Lincoln gained on Trinity so rapidly that they bumped them at the Ferry. Exeter also quickly overtook Queen's and overlapped them them at the Freewater Stone, but the latter spirted clear and pulled on as far as the Long Bridges before being bumped. There was some close racing between the next three boats, St. John's overlapped New College [II] at the Willows and Magdalen II at the same time being close up to St. John's. No bump, however, took place, and New College were a length to the good at the finish. Magdalen II overlapped St. John's at the Cherwell and missed making the bump.First Division

In the Torpid races at Oxford yesterday ten bumps were recorded, three in the Third Division, five in the Second, and two in the First. The weather was fine and large numbers of spectators watched the racing.Third Division

There was a fine race between Hertford and St. Catherine's, the latter at one time being within 6ft., but the effort was not maintained, and Hertford, after a strenuous spurt, succeeded in displacing Christ Church II at the Cherwell. Worcester II sustained their fourth reverse, St. Edmund Hall overtaking them near the Long Bridges. University II, the boat which was newly entered this year, scored its fourth success by bumping St. John's II before reaching the Long Bridges.Second Division
The order of starting was :— Corpus Christi, Oriel, Keble, Pembroke, Lincoln, Trinity, Exeter, Queen's, New College II, St. John's, Magdalen II, Hertford. Oriel were bumped by Keble just after passing the Freewater Stone and, near the same place, Pembroke were displaced by Lincoln. Trinity were bumped by Exeter at the Long Bridges, and Queen's were caught by New College II near the Freewater Stone. St. John's were bumped at the Crossing by Magdalen II.First Division
The order of starting was :— University, Merton, Balliol, Christ Church, Magdalen, New College, Brasenose, Wadham, Balliol II, Worcester, Corpus Christi. The leading boat maintained its position with ease. Christ Church, who started at the head of the river, went down for the fourth time opposite their own barge, where they were bumped by Magdalen. Brasenose also suffered their fourth reverse, Wadham bumping them before reaching the Long Bridges. Worcester narrowly escaped being bumped by Corpus Christi, who were within two yards of them at the finish.The races will be continued to-day.
The weather was dull and wet when the Torpid Races were continued at Oxford yesterday. The racing was not very exciting, there being only seven bumps, one in the Third Division, four in the Second Division, and two in the First Division.Third Division

St. Catherine's bumped Christ Church II at the Green Bank. There was a close struggle between Worcester II and Wadham II, the latter being close on to them at the Long Bridges and again at the Wall, and at the finish Worcester II were barely three yards to the good. University II gained on Jesus along Iffley Reach and were within a few yards of them, but the latter drew away.Second Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows :— Corpus Christi, Keble, Oriel, Lincoln, Pembroke, Exeter, Trinity, New College II, Queen's, Magdalen II, St. John's, and Hertford. Corpus Christi, Keble, Oriel, Lincoln, Pembroke, Exeter, Trinity, New College II, Queen's, Magdalen II, St. John's, and Hertford. Lincoln gained on Oriel until at the Cherwell the boats overlapped, but at the finish the latter crew were half a length clear. Pembroke were bumped by Exeter at the Green Bank, and New College II bumped Trinity before reaching the Long Bridges. Magdalen II bumped Queen's after passing the Freewater Stone, and St. John's were bumped by Hertford at the Red Post.First Division
The order of starting in this division was as follows :— University, Merton, Balliol, Magdalen, Christ Church, New College, Wadham, Brasenose, Balliol II, Worcester, and Corpus Christi. The leading boat maintained its position with ease, and the next three boats rowed up at much the same distance as they had started. Wadham pressed hard upon New College, and were within two yards at the finish. Brasenose's run of reverses continued, and at the end of Iffley Reach they were bumped by Balliol II, and Corpus Christi bumped Worcester at the Green Bank.The races will be continued to-day.
The weather yesterday for the concluding day of the University Torpid Races at Oxford was very favourable, and there was a large attendance of spectators.The number of bumps made in the three divisions was eight, two in the Third Division, four in the Second Division, and two in the First Division.
Third Division
The order of starting in this division was :— St. John's, St. Catherine's, Christ Church II, St. Edmund Hall, Worcester II, Wadham II, Jesus, University II, St. John's II, Brasenose II, Oriel II, Exeter II. Wadham II gained on Worcester II along Iffley Reach, and made their bump before reaching the Long Bridges. St. John's were bumped by St. Catherine's at the Willows. Oriel II missed bumping Brasenose II near the Post by about a foot.Second Division
The order of starting in this division was :— Worcester, Keble, Oriel, Lincoln, Exeter, Pembroke, New College II, Trinity, Magdalen II, Queen's, Hertford, St. Catherine's. Keble gained on Worcester from the start, and bumped them when nearing the Long Bridges. A quarter of a length only separated Lincoln from Oriel in Iffley Reach, and at the finish they were about that distance apart. New College II bumped Pembroke at the Green Bank, and shortly after passing the Freewater Stone Magdalen II bumped Trinity. An excellent race was seen between Queen's, Hertford, and St. Catherine's, the last-named overlapping Hertford just at the moment when Queen's were bumped by Hertford, this being the sixth bump made against them.First Division
The order of starting in this division was :— University, Merton, Balliol, Magdalen, Christ Church, New College, Wadham, Balliol II, Brasenose, Corpus Christi, Keble. University retained their position as head of the river, finishing a length in front of Merton. Balliol II bumped Wadham at the Free Ferry, and near the same place Brasenose were bumped by Corpus Christi, this making their sixth downward move during the six days' racing. Fifty two bumps were made, of which five each were made by Keble and Exeter and four each by Lincoln, Hertford, and University II. Brasenose and Queen's lost six places each, Pembroke, Trinity, and Worcester II five each, and Christ Church and St. John's four each.
