Oriel's shaky headship is in danger
By a Special CorrespondentPredicting the Oxford Torpids is traditionally difficult: but this year's bumping races, which start today, should at last see several changes in the top men's and women's divisions.
Keble and Exeter look likely to come down while Worcester and Christ Church should eventually provide strong and experienced challenges to Oriel's long-standing, but now rather shaky, headship. In the women's division the Osler House medical students are widely tipped to go ahead [sic] while Worcester and St Catherine's in their new carbocraft boat look strong.
Further down, Oriel II in the men's and Somerville in the women's top division look too highly placed. Both are well drilled and neither will surrender without a fight in what promises to be four days of exciting racing.
Oriel set the standard on first day
By a Special CorrespondentThe Oxford Torpids started yesterday with the overall standard of rowing markedly better than on recent first days. It was particularly good to see the full involvement of the University lightweight oarsmen as part of their own race preparation.
At the top of the men's first division, Oriel comfortably rowed over, while Keble resisted a strong Worcester challenge. Christ Church, however, who had been expected to bump Exeter, overwhelmed them within 25 strokes, and this should give them extra confidence for today.
In the women's first division, Osler House moved up strongly to catch [?] Lady Margaret Hall, who in turn bumped the head crew Jesus. St Catherine's held off St Hilda's, whereas St Anne's fought bravely but were bumped by both St Hugh's and Pembroke. Events have therefore proved far from predictable and this bodes well.
Oriel still in CommandThe evaluation of actual, claimed and disputed bumps in the Men's Second Div. kept the Oxford University Torpids Committee active well beyond dusk last night.
But neither Keble nor Worcester threatened Oriel's supremacy at the head of Div. I.
Only a disallowed bump by Lincoln on Oriel II prevented a General Post throughout the rest of the first three Men's Divisions [I have no idea what that means]
Untroubled waters
By a Special CorrespondentThe second day of the Oxford Torpids saw further excellent racing, although this was marred at times by some poor coxing, even in the higher divisions. In the men's first division Oriel had another untroubled day while Keble rowed over behind them. Christ Church, as predicted, continued to make rapid progress and bumped Worcester well before the Gut.
At the top of the women's first division Osler House, coached by Benedictine monk Nick O'Sullivan, bumped Lady Margaret Hall and went Head for the first time in the club's history.
Osler House take overBy a Special Correspondent
Osler House, in the Oxford University Torpids yesterday, achieved their first-ever headship when the women medical students ended Lady Margaret Hall's one-night reign at the top of the women's divisions.
Delicacy of bladework was inadequate compensation for the Hall's lack of power and Osler made their bump before the Gut.
In the men's divisions Oriel rowed over, unchallenged by Keble, who were five or more lengths in their wake, but lingering at the finish line too long cost Oriel a £5 fine.
Oriel's second boat was a victim in the general mayhem caused by Balliol's late acknowledgement of their bump.
First threat to leadersThe third day of the Oxford University Torpids yesterday cleared the way for Christ Church and St Catherine's to provide the first serious challenges to the present leaders of the men's and women's first divisions, Oriel and Osler House (a Special Correspondent writes).
In the men's division Christ Church had a less controlled row than hitherto but were easily strong enough to bump Keble in the Gut. Exeter, Christ Church's victims of the first day, made a well-deserved bump on Worcester.
Osler and Oriel leadBy a Special Correspondent
Oriel and Osler House reigned over the men's and women's sections of Oxford University Torpids last night while a more settled pecking order began to emerge behind them.
Christ Church moved into threatening posture after taking Keble on the Green Bank. The allegation that the House's progress was encouraged by eight cycling supporters was magnanimously reduced to three cyclists and the committee settled for a £10 fine.
Early optimism that Lincoln had bumped Oriel II was replaced by more reliable news that first St Edmund Hall, then Brasenose and later Queen's actually had bumped Lincoln in the First Division.
Five places dropped
Lower down University II's late acknowledgment of a bump caused their descent by five places.
In the women's division, L.M.H.'s brief tenure of the headship was relegated to the realms of misty memory as the Hall was bumped by St Catherine's after being holed by Keble's men's boat.
St Hilda's effective and hefty power took each of their three boats up a place.
Oriel remained head of the Oxford University Torpids last night, a position they have held for more than 10 years. A distance that had closed to 2½ lengths ahead of Christ Church prevented the House making its fourth bump in as many nights.Equally prodigious margins held Keble, Exeter, Worcester and Pembroke securely in the next four places, but Ian McEwen took St Edmund Hall up their fourth notch by taking Oriel's second eight on the Green Bank.
In the women's divisions Osler House remained three lengths clear of St Catherine's with Lady Margaret Hall well astern.
Set for Summer EightsOxford University Torpids finished on Saturday with some further exciting racing and some more long downward slides in the table (a Special Correspondent writes).
St Catherine's and Christ Church never under pressure from behind had good solid rows but lacked the extra sparkle necessary to dislodge both Osler House and Oriel from their respective headships. Credit must, however, go to all four crews for their achievements during the week and they should all feature prominently in the Summmer Eights next term.
Oriel keep Headship on IsisBy a Special Correspondent
The Christ Church challenge to Oriel's decade of supremacy on the Isis faltered and had failed long before the Boathouses on the last night of the Oxford University Torpids.
So Oriel retained the Head position, while Osler House confirmed the Women's Head status they gained for the first time on Thursday night. Both crews are coached by Nick O'Sullivan.
By taking Oriel II with their fourth bump, St Edmund Hall were the only crew to ruffle the pattern of the first ten men's places established on Friday.
Luckless Keble
St Benet's solitary, Linacre's two and each of St Catherine's six eights moved up during the week, an achievement nearly equalled by St Hugh's four crews. Luckless Keble's seven crews all descended, the third boat by 13 places — this year's record.
Greatest gain by LMHThe article lists the finishing order with net gains/losses of each crew. The finishing order for Oxford University Torpids, in which Oriel retained the headship in the men's event and Osler House finished top of the women's for the first time, shows Lady Margaret Hall first men's crew making the greatest gain and Keble III the greatest loss.
