Once again, the eventual success of Torpids was due mainly to the fact that the rain the Met Office kept predicting never arrived. Blessed as we were by this, another round of bumps took place on the Isis.As always it was a turbulent event, with some crews excelling against all odds, and some struggling to fight off the crew behind. Pembroke M1 were the crew to watch in the Men's First Division, and they didn't disappoint, rising successfully to head of the river on the first day, and managing to stick it out for the remainder [?]. Special mention should also go to New M1 who managed to streak up the rankings, getting Div 1 blades by jumping up to 6th on the river. In the lower divisions, blades were also amassed by many crews (as was evinced on the chart kept at Race Desk, which meant we knew which crews had achieved that glory before their own college knew). Naming just the crews that managed to get over-bumps on their way to blades would make for an extensive list (and I did try, before realising the extent of the task), but it made for each division being an exciting one.
In the Women's Divisions, St Catherine's W1 put in an impressive performance to remain at the top of the Women's Division for the duration. Oriel W1 and Christ Church W1 battled for the chance to change this, but neither were able to deny Catz, despite powerful races. The divisions were, just as with the men, ripe with opportunities for blades (and unfortunately for some, spoons), and again the list of successful crews is too long to delve into at the risk of making this report too long to read.
With the ever-present threat of cancellation due to rain, and the other ridiculous weather Oxford is cursed with during Hilary term, every Torpids is closely contested at every level, and this Torpids was no exception. Thanks must go to the members of Race Committee, who performed admirably under the pressure, and congratulations to all who competed, regardless of the result.
