In this newsletter we have the results and reports of Summer Eights and
other racing. Catz managed to qualify 6 crews for Eights,
which would have been our largest entry since 1996. Unfortunately, following
a rules infraction (basically having an outing using a sub who had
just failed his swim test) the men's 3rd Eight were subsequently
withdrawn. Even so,
it was the first appearance of a women's 3rd (Schools) Eight since 2003.
Eights 2015 also marked the last appearance of Mal Spencer who has competed, man-and-cox, for Catz in no fewer than 84 bumping races, interspersed with the odd foray into studying Soviet history. The Boat Club found an appropriate medium through which to express their appreciation. Earlier this term the women finally took delivery of their new VIII, with Andrew Triggs Hodge, currently off international duty due to glandular fever, coming down to the boathouse to perform the honours. And, as is now traditional, the winner of this year's Ben Sylvester Award was presented with her medal on the Saturday of Eights. |

The £ 27 000 cost of the boat was met by a donation from
former Catz oarsman David Morris and another alumnus who prefers to remain
anonymous. If the new boat's name seems familiar to some of you
it is because it was also the name
of a wooden clinker VIII that served the Boat Club for many years.
As a fresher back in January 1958, Prof. Morris had been one of the crew
which had taken delivery of the original in Putney and
was keen to see the name revived.
Thanks also to Poppy Lambert, last year's women's captain, for overseeing the whole process.

Every year the Ben Sylvester medal is presented to the person
judged
to have made the greatest contribution to St Catherine's Rowing
The winner of this year's award is Miriam Mahmoud. In her 3 years here, Miriam has rowed in the women's 3rd, 2nd and 1st VIIIs, was a Captain of lower boats last year and women's Vice-Captain this year. She was described by those who nominated her as someone who had 'dedicated her time in Oxford to the Boat Club' and having 'an unshakable love for rowing'. Maris Serzans proxime accessit. Also nominated were Alex Barbaro, Linda Geaves, Rebecca Lenihan, Georgios Ntentas, Adam Weston and James Wills. |

Coming Up ...In the next issue there will be reports and results on the summer's rowing, an attempt to piece together everything we know about the early days of the Boat Club (1876-1900) and, moving into the new academic year, a summary of where we now stand, both financially and competitively.Anu Dudhia (email: dudhia@atm.ox.ac.uk ) |
