Swim Tests
Email sent out by Bianca Rautenbach on 25th Oct
Hey guys and gals!
For ALL of you who want to row in any regatta while you are enjoying your
time here at Oxford, there is one thing you need to do....
and that is take a SWIM TEST!!!!
These are handled by the university and if you do not attend one you cant
row in Christ church, torpids, eights or any other regatta.
so the basic idea is that these are VERY IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!
These are the slots we have available.
Saturday 28th October, 2006 - Week 3 (Michaelmas Term)7.00pm ^Ö Open
Session.
Saturday 4th November, 2006 - Week 4 (Michaelmas Term)
6.00pm ^Ö St Catz
7.00pm ^Ö Open Session.
Only if you cannot make it to the Catz session on Saturday the 4th Nov,
because of an extremely good reason, are you allowed to attend the open
sessions.
So what i need you to do is....
1. open diary and check day is free
2. write in big bold letters (preferably with a red pen) that you have a
swim test
3. e-mail me with your full name and bod card number to say that you are
coming
good work!
here are a few more details, read on at own risk.....
On The Day:
Please arrive at the Sports Department reception at least 15 minutes
before your scheduled slot, where you will be directed to the dry side
changing room. Get changed in the dry changing room and then proceed to
poolside taking all your belongings with you. This will prevent you
having to cross the reception area in wet clothes following your test.
Please make sure you bring your bod card to the test itself as proof of
identity.
During the test you are required to wear, at a minimum, shorts and
t-shirt. Since you won^Òt have them when you^Òre rowing out on the
river, goggles are not allowed. We ask that everyone shower before
entering the pool and wait poolside until an examiner instructs them
further. After testing, we ask that everyone leave the pool as swiftly
as possible.
The Test Itself:
It should be remembered that the swim tests are an exercise in assessing
survival skills and should not be considered a competitive event.
However, if you believe your college will be testing some weaker swimmers
please inform your examiner at the beginning of the session.
The ARA required standard of swimming ability for rowers and coxswains is
set out in the Water Safety Code:
^ÓAn ability to swim 50 metres in light clothing and to
demonstrate within the test competence underwater, in treading water, and
in swimming on front and back is considered a minimum requirement.^Ô
Therefore rowers are asked to complete the following:
* 50 metres continuous swim (25 metres on your front and 25 metres on
your back)
* Pick a brick up from deep water (1.8 metres)
* Tread water for 1 minute
ok so now you know....
have a nice day
