Punctuation

Parentheses

Unlike mathematics parentheses are not `nested' in text. So

  • … was coloured turquoise (a fact also noted by Sprat, 1932). not … was coloured turquoise (a fact also noted by Sprat (1932)).

Comma

There is no comma after 'i.e.' or 'e.g.'. So

  • … sampling times (e.g. equatorial crossing at 10:30 and 15:30). not … sampling times (e.g., equatorial crossing at 10:30 and 15:30).
