Data Gridding

There are two separate issues for gridding the satellite data:
  • Gridding data for general comparison with model output.
  • Gridding data for use in particular case studies.
No decision was made regarding the gridding of data for particular case studies where a greater temporal resolution (where available) may be required. To aid with this in the future the following table may prove useful.

InstrumentWavelength (um)Operational PeriodRepeat CycleHeight Resolution
SAGE I0.450, 1.000Three years from Feb 197940 days1 km
SAGE II0.385, 0.453, 0.525, 1.019Launched October 198440 days1 km
CLAES12.821st October 1991 to 5th May 19931 day3 km
HALOE2.45, 3.40, 3.46, 5.26October 1991 to present40 days3 km
ISAMS4.51, 5.28, 6.23, 6.76, 7.43, 7.81, 8.09, 10.0, 11.4, 12.1, 16.3Sept 12 1991 to July 29 199216 days3 km

For general comparisons the data are gridded as follows:
  • The range of heights will be from as low as possible (approx 6 km) up to as high as is available with the best possible vertical resolution for the instrument (see column five in above table).
  • 28 day period means.
  • Horizontal resolution of 6 degrees latitude and 24 degrees longitude.
