The Data Product Naming Convention

The naming conventions make use of the following fields:
  • INSTR : five spaces indicating the instrument name.
  • TYP : three spaces to indicate the type of data, RAW or MODified.
  • VER : three spaces for is the version number.
  • HDF : indicates the file format.
  • PRODUCT : seven spaces for product name (used for derived products only).

Direct measurement data

All direct measurement data are contained in files of the form INSTR_TYP_VER.HDF

For example the SAGE2_RAW_010.HDF file contains the following data:

  • Aerosol extinction at SAGE II wavelengths.
  • Temperature.
  • Water vapour mixing ratio.
  • Uncertainties for above measurements.

Derived measurement data

All derived measurement data are contained in files of the form PRODUCT_INSTR_TYP_VER.HDF

For example the EFFRADS_SAGE2_RAW_010.HDF file for SAGE II aerosol effective radius.

The TYP identifier

The TYP field will contain either 'MOD' or 'RAW'. The 'RAW' identifier is used when there has been no post-processing of the data (other than gridding).

The 'MOD' identifier is used when data have been subjected to some modification. For example applying interpolation techniques to SAGE II extinction data to fill in missing values. For this example the data datafile would be named SAGE2_MOD_010.HDF.

A MOD file will always be produced when producing a derived PRODUCT file containing data from more than one instrument.

Descriptions for the modifications to MOD files can be obtained from MOD File Descriptions.
